Difficult question to answer......how long is a piece of string? Easier to say how much is the most you are prepared to spend (including cost of additional laser ir illuminator), as this will help narrow down the models you can choose.

Good gen 1 with laser IR I hear will do 100 yards and gen 2 does it no problem at all. In my opinion I would say Gen 1 is best suited to ratting and rabbiting wheras Gen 2 plus can do this and more ie foxes (you may need to watch the fox out at 200-300yards) and then wait for it to come in to 100 yards, I doubt you could do that with Gen 1 stuff.

How much are you prepared to spend?

I have tested lots of various NV devices recently and some were tested under extreme measures in a light tunnel with zero ambient light, to really put the devices through their paces.

I have a Pulsar N550 Digisight (£999.90) on my Air Arms S400 and it is fantastic for rabbiting at night and out to 250 meters it works perfectly.

I use it handheld also for wildlife monitoring and find it remarkable, outputting footage to my Yukon Mobile Personal Recorder.

I took some handheld video footage of it for our site,

Gunmart magazine have just reviewed the Pulsar N550 in the magazine this month also.

As for IR, the N550 comes with a built in IR which is good enough for rimfire and air rifle, but the optional IR flashlight has seen consistent results out to 250yards no issues.

A few people are going for the IR Laser devices to increase range further and Pulsar have developed a new adaptor to take the Laserluchs IR lasers. But the Laserluchs are serious bits of kit, at a serious price.

If you need any info or assistance, dont hesitate to get in touch.

Regards

Paul

How di you get on ......did you buy any NV ?

I HAVE TRIED A GEN 1 UNIT .THIS UNIT IN MY OPINION WILL BE CAPABLE FOR ACCURATE FOX CONTROL TO ABOUT 50 METRES.THE INBUILT I/R WILL PICK UP EYES FURTHER THAN THIS BUT WILL NOT POSITIVELY IDENTIFY OBJECT AT THAT DISTANCE .THE FOX WOULD HAVE TO BE IDENTIFIED FIRST WITH NORMAL LAMP TECHNIQUE THEN I/R USED AT CLOSER DISTANCE.TJE PROBLEM BEING WITH NIGHTSIGHTS IS BEING ABLE TO TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.
