Pignut 4
I have a few books on Patterdale/Fell terriers and I would like to know the difference between the types. I was told (by someone in the Patterdale Rescue world) that a Patterdale is black and Fells are either black/tan or red. Is a Fell terrier a name that encompasses all types of terriers as well as Patterdales? Please can someone explain clearly, in worlds of one syllable for me. Thanks Pignut Quote Link to post

Pignut 4
..... and your point is what precisely? I can ask who i like without being judged by you. If I want to rescue a dog, give it a better home, offer it a life of unlimited walkies, with a 50 acre garden, then I bloody well will without you making judgements about someone and somewhere you know nothing about. So back to my question, could someone please help with a sensible reply. Thank you. 1 Quote Link to post

witton 6
They are two names for the same breed  Quote Link to post
targa 5
why do you need to now what that difference is, if you just want to rescue a terrier I think a Pat got more bull blood, so its softer and more social A Fell is more bred out of the hairy stuff, lakie, bedlington and co. (I think) :11: Its more like homo-sapiens (pat) and neanderthaler (fell) Quote Link to post
Pignut 4
Thanks for your replies. I want to know because I got this "Patterdale" bitch from a reputable home, Beanie at 6 months! Her sister and mother and father all look like Patterdales but she looks like this - sort of Border/Lakie cross but also like some of the "patterdales" you read about in books in the 1980's. I know she has Middleton in her but her family really do not look like her in any way at all! She is not a rescue but when I was looking for a Patt, I did ask the Rescue lot what they had on their books. I showed the Rescue lady a photo of Beanie and she said she did not think she looked very Patterdale and that Patts were black and Fells were the other colours. So, hence my question. Anywho, I am just doing some research as I want to know if Beanie looks like a throw-back to older Patterdale/Fell terriers and if there is a difference between the types or just the same name for both. I will dig out my books and find photos of similar, if you are interested, that call themselves Patterdales. Quote Link to post

Guest MOLLY
ORT is correct, its a good book and puts quite a bit about the breeding into perspective. Alot of fells had border influence in them, and alot of patterdale had fell blood...all somewhere way down the lines. So it is quite possible your dog is a throw back from a previous generation. And could be a mixture of Pat, fell & border and of course Lakie from the Middleton strain genetically...all very confusing when you properly look into it MOLL. Quote Link to post
nelson 0
Old Beanie looks like a black and tan lakie to me Quote Link to post
monkeychops 2
hi pignut, In my opinion, a black fell, is a terrier with a rough / broken coat and a patterdale a smooth coated type ie: gould lines and nuttal line. Many people will argue that because the town of patterdale is in the north lakes, that the terriers from that area, should be mostly rough coated, due to weather conditions etc,, thats why people think rough coated black terriers should be called patterdales. Most fell terriers are rough coated, lakelands, black, black & tans, and most terrierman have breed between all the strains of fell terriers, and even breed from predigree kc terriers? To get conformation, and tighter coat types. Personally myself, if that is a picture of your terrier, i would class that as a cross breed fell. Black to a black & tan. possibly!! Quote Link to post

nelson 0
Thats 'cos Bull breeds are so friendly and cuddly :11: just like this little lady used to be Quote Link to post
Pignut 4
Brilliant photo - I want her - she looks beautiful! Anyway, here is a photo from the book which shows some Fells from Ullswater. Bean, IMO, looks like the one in the middle, so I think she is a throw-back to previous ancestry. The main reason I just want to clarify what my dog is (and what "breed" to call her) is that everyone always asks when they meet her and I want to get it right, and also have some proof to back-up my claims while so-called knowledgeable folk fall about on the floor laughing when I say she is a Patterdale or a Fell, as she really does not resemble today's dogs! I also think she has a look of Wendy Pinckney's dogs too. Thanks Edited October 24, 2006 by Pignut Quote Link to post
