5 in the lamp last night

Went out last night for an impromptu look for Charlie on one of my permissions. After a lot of calling there was no joy but I did come across 5 Roe that were skulking around on of the hedge lines.

 

I was surprised at how un-spooked they were by the lamp and they just kept looking at it wondering what was going on. I managed to stalk to within 70-100yds across open field but identification under the lamp at that distance was limited. I estimate 1 buck 2 does and 2 followers, so hopefully a few kids to come in the next few months

 

Just need to convince the farmer he likes venison now

Shooting deer in the light is fine but shooting them in the dark is cruel????????????

the only thing with shooting deer in the lamp is that you take away a rest period (every time they see the lamp they will be disturbed).there is nothing "cruel" about it.

deer cause damage to the land and are often considered a "pest",its ok to shoot rabbit etc in the lamp but not deer????????????????????? sorry don't get the point.

i do not shoot deer in the lamp as its illegal,but if it were allowed and helped in the management plan then i would not hesitate.

the shooting of deer 1 hour before and one hour after sun up/down is adequate as it is.in germany this applies to ALL game (all animals covered by the hunting licence are considered "game" inc' rabbit,fox,badger. the only animals allowed to be shot with "man made light of ANY kind" are raccoon,cats,mink,martin dog and other "neozoen").

i had fifteen fallow in the lamp the other day which stood there like sheep (i need a word with that farmer too!!).

More important is way you manage ,if problem with deer. inbred shoot & injured, all in seasons. Maybe one day none in uk, every one shoot deer here.

 

I find 2 almos dead this week, still warm, must be suffer long hours,with bullet hole from small calibre rifle, some peoples stupid !

you found two wounded deer this week???

if you shoot at it you should follow it up.

i hope you gralloched them and went back when it was dark clint?

I think Clint was infering that someone else had shot them (poacher?) and he had found them. Someone shooting at deer with small cal rifles is hardly likely to follow up.

as i said mate even if on the "wrong side of the fence" if you have the balls to shoot at it you should get rid of the gun and have a walk with the dog and find it.

leaving a deer to die like that is unsporting and morally unsound( i have found that some "poachers" have had better understanding of morals and sportsmanship than alot of men with permission).

i was not insinuating that clint had shot them,i am just astounded that he has found two in a week.

lamping any quarry takes the skill and the thrill out of stalking it in the first place, ok this might not be true with fox and rabbit or any other vermin as the bottom line is you need to control them by any means possible, but i think a shootig deeer in the lamp is different as identification in nearly impossible.
