Hollie 21
alot of people seem to slag lurchers saying they have no place in the countryside and i dont mean all but 7-8 out of 10 keepers, shooters, stalkers etc in truth look down on us and think they are better than us but they are not better not even on a level with us!!! they might spend £1000s on their sport and guns etc and have more permission than they can use BUT they forget you cant put a price on watching a dog you have brought on come good!! a gun can be locked away all summer but a dog will make that summer loads better on evening walks out and a good fishing partner!! alot of people i no round here shoot and have only done it for 2-3 seasons and when you walk in the pubs they drink after a shoot on sat in the season with your lurcher you can see them all look away and then on monday in the same pub there like "sorry i blanked you its cause you had your lurcher and the other guns dont like them" and im like !!! this is not aimed at anybody off this site just some dickhead has wound me up earlier today about this saying lurcher owners are just poachers!!! end of the day ANYBODY can be put on a peg with a 12g and shoot pheasants that are just as tame as chickens but live in woods its not hard and they pay £20 a bird if they think we are just poachers f**k em ill die with that title gladly knowing ive never paid £20 for a pheasant you could offer me a pair of purdeys for my bitch and you would still get told to feck off!! im proud to be a lurcherman and will be till the day i die!!! to the dogs atb jimmy Well said Quote Link to post
cooper101 86
im very fortunate around my way!! i take my lurcher beating with me the guns on my shoot see him as a local character and they all love to hear of how hes done on our hunting outings in the week they havent seen him,in the pub after beating hes allways the first dog in there to get treats off the landlady( hes her rabbit supplier ) i have days when i go in there during winter and i dont pay for one drink as people i have given rabbits to like to pay me back buy buying me a drink back( if im owed buy a lot as i usally am and there all in there the night can get very messy ) !! so i myself havent suffered what you have jimmy100 but i have a friend who is in his second year gamkeepering course and was set up with a cushty little job on a very posh shoot a little up the way from were we live and because he kept lurchers and there had been hares run by a simaler looking dog to one of his the head keeper was told by the stuck up lady of the estate not to let him come back !! a total liberty in my eyes just because he was the only one who kept lurchers they blamed him wronguns in all walks of life jimmy but you just leave them ones to it and crack on with people who arent ashamed to call you a friend Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
I went to a gun shop yesterday and was treated like a second class citizen by the gun fraternity because i was a lurcher owner...comments like you "you lurcher boys are why the sport is like it is!"I know all gun men are not the same,i even know some that run lurchers. But it's the childish stuck up minority that really think they're above everybody else...yis John Quote Link to post
bird 9,984
I have been tagged a poacher most of my life and will be for the rest of my days mainley down to the dogs i keep but one thing is for certain the lurcher is a lot more accepted nowadays than it was 30 years ago proberbly due to the fact before the hunting ban came in and they needed all the support they could get. SPOT ON,and i went on all the marches to london, and stood shoulder+shoulder with farmers,keepers,etc...... And they still dont+wont have a lurcher on there ground. It was like this (25)years ago, nothing changes, had (25)years knocking on doors, with a (BIG NO )and they (wonder) why you poach.?? Quote Link to post
jimmy100 48
"alot of people seem to slag lurchers saying they have no place in the countryside and i dont mean all but 7-8 out of 10 keepers, shooters, stalkers etc in truth look down on us and think they are better than us but they are not better not even on a level with us!!! " No offence mate but your comments and post is bullshit and holds no water. I would say 7-8 out of 10 SUPPORT what your doing and the minority (hypocrites)are against it. I know dozens of keepers who run lurchers and terriers, so dont generalise them all with the few tossers you have met. Generalising people like that is like saying all dogmen are thieves - see what i mean And £20 per pheasant - more like £45 plus VAT. Dont start bickering with people who enjoy a different sport than yourself, that makes you no better than an anti - if not worse because its people like you who split us up when we should stand as one. If you subdivide us into small categories we have a much smaller voice than when we are all together. There would be a 10 fold bigger turnout to the hunting marches without attitudes like yours! FTB theres always one !!! im talking about my own experiences and you cant argue with that so please dont start being funny or debating on here ftb Quote Link to post
poacher3161 1,766
90 pct of keepers 30 odd years ago would not have anything to do with lurchers or their owners and their will always be a divide between shooting men and lurcher men due to old fashioned stigmas attatched to the lurcher being the known dog of the poacher.[bANNED TEXT] i got my first spaniel though and bred the odd litter lads who had them as well as lurchers started gettin accepted a bit more by keepers and shooting men leading to some of them gaining permmision on land that would have been beyond their wildest dreams 30 years ago plus more keepers nowadays have grown up around lurchers and terriers . Born Hunter 17,817
This thread reminds me of a piece in darcy's Running Dog Addiction, i think its called Nell. Good read and shows the lurcherman/keeper relationship and how a good lurcher with an owner with the right attitude can convert even the most anti lurcher keeper. Quote Link to post
