drwolly 8
Im thinking of buying a 20bore moderated shotgun, could anyone tell me how much difference the mod actually makes? and is it worth the investment in one? ATB Quote Link to post
willum 89
takes quite a bit of the snap out of the shot mate but for best results use sub sonic cartridges with them makes alot of difference when pigeon shooting ast the noise is less and the birds dont seem as spooky. Quote Link to post

ATB The nosie reduction is major as long as you use subsonic cartridges. I have a 12 bore baikal hushpower, can't say I use it much as it is a single barrel which is the size of a scaffold pole lol! Always good to show your mates though. Quote Link to post

drwolly 8
Thanks for the replies, I was going to get a 410 but was put off with the size of cartridges and possible range and was told that if you use the 3" magnums to gain range etc then you loose the effect of the mod. What are "sub sonic" catridges, as I have never heard of them? Does the 12 bore moderated work well then to silence the noise as well? . cheers for the help Quote Link to post

Does the 12 bore moderated work well then to silence the noise as well? . cheers for the help I suppose it depends what you are going to be shooting as to what gage you need, ie a 410 in my opinion is a waste for pigeon shooting but great for ratting. I ain't no technical expert but moderators work most effectively if they are used in conjunction with sub-sonic ammo that travels at less than the speed of sound ie 350 meters per second (1,148 ft/s). This equates to 1,270 kilometers per hour (789 mph), or about one kilometer in three seconds and about one mile in five seconds. I used 32gram hushpower subs in my 12 bore. Quote Link to post
drwolly 8
I will be shooting mainly pigeon and rooks hopefully, problem is nearby neighbours as well so thought I would try a moderated gun Quote Link to post
stubby 175
my first shotgun was a pedretti hushpower, yup, was like swinging a drainpipe, but only ever used sub sonics in it, check out your local gun shop, to see if they keep the cartridges in stock, as some shops sell them as dear as £6-50 per box of 25 anyway, I never had the need to wear earplugs, it was that quite, on getting a semi auto, I couldent belive how much noise the hushpower had actually been suppressing, they are good when you have permissions with noise issues, they may still sound noisey to you, but get someone to stand 30ft away, they will tell you how quite they are, Ive still kept my 410 pedretti hushpower, purely for urban fox control/live catch traps, again, using sub sonics, I dispatched a fox, yet a lady hanging washing out two gardens away, didnt bat an eyelid 12gauge pedretti 410 pedretti Quote Link to post
drwolly 8
Thanks for the advice stubby, think I might invest in one of the mossberg 12 g semi's Quote Link to post
alun1960 234
I have used a pedretti 20g hushpower for a few years now for day and night mooching around, use fibre wads less cleaning the mod of plastic bits. Well worth having and a bit more use out of it than my old 410 hushpower. Quote Link to post
stubby 175
Thanks for the advice stubby, think I might invest in one of the mossberg 12 g semi's dont know how true it is, but reading reviews on mossberg, they aint as quite as the single shot type, even with sub sonics, Quote Link to post

ATB Any shotgun will be a lot quieter to start with if you use sub sonic ammo, that could be a first step to see if that is quiet enough!! Quote Link to post
unclemicky 3
I have a 410 Mossburg Hushpower and wow it's really quiet , I dont have any problem bringing down doves and ferals 2 1/2 or 3 inch both work well. Quote Link to post
