mattydski 560
Just picked a Hornet up this year for short range Fox work and long range vermin control......... This was 180'ish yards........and this one wasn't alone...I love my Hornet, and to be honest I tend to leave the .243 in the cabinet for most outings now. I bought it because I reload and the cost to shoot, is very much reduced...I can afford to use it on rabbits, it costs about the same a factory HMR.. and know what I'd rather be shooting.. charlie caller 3,654
HI, I use a cz 527 hornet and reload my own ammo, which to be honest mate is the secret of getting the most out of a hornet,12.3 grains of h110 under a 35 grain vmax will cloverleaf at 100 yards in my rifle, and ive shot foxes at well over 160yds stone dead and crows at 200 plus, also its pretty quiet for a cf with a good mod fitted mines a pes/mae 8 inch small cf mod, factory ammo is expensive and apart from hornady, not brilliant, you deffo wont be disappointed with a hornet mate and most people who have em love em and wouldent part with em, good hunting CHARLIE CALLER Quote Link to post

If you are getting it for nowt then go for it, it will do the job! Most foxes are shot at under 150 yards anyway. Let us know how you get on. Put the money you save towards your reloading equipment. Try telling the foxes that round my way, they are wary so and so,s, even the rabbits carry lightforce lamps with them as they know a fox will keep a distance of at least 200yds+ TELL THEM DAVE Quote Link to post
willum 89
me and most of my mates do alot of fox shooting but very rarely we shoot at anything over a hundred yrds but hey thats just us spoke to a few other lads on here and they say the same but cant vouch for every one though we do and have got fox's that wont come with in 3 to 4 hundred yrds of a lamp so these are not worth taking pot shots at mate this is what makes them lamp shy i think. where we shoot there is others on neighbouring land and if they miss and charley comes our way lamp on fox shows heels and is off even a quiet squeak and there gone.but i do and have shot well over 200 yrds at fox's needs are must when out doing the rounds for shoot sindicates. yis willum. Anything over 300 yds is foolish taking a shot, regularly i shoot foxes 200+, at this time of the year FOXES are not stupid they have heard and seen it all, but if you have ranged strategic points on your permissions you have a fairly good idea how far charlie is away, my best ever was 365yds, more luck than skill i must admit. There is quite a variation on bullet heads available from 30gn to 45 gn i have just used some Berger 35 gn hollow point and they are great. as already said, very underated calibre, but seeing the amount of posts on this site over the last 6 months or so i think it is becoming more popular. If the rifle offered is in good nick then you will not be dissapointed. LD Quote Link to post
Treacle Trackpad 6
1. Get Hornet for nowt. 2. Sell Hornet. 3. Variation. 4. Buy .222 Job Jobbed Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
The Hornet and the .22WMR are two calibres that just don't get most people too excited. Simple fact is, the reality is dawning and people are slowly moving back to them, as they most certainly do have a place. If you can reload, the Hornet really does seem to be a winner for many!! Mr_Logic 5
You need to reload Hornet. I also use 12.3 gr H110 under 35gr V-max. It rarely exits a fox - nice solid thump and charlie falls over no problem, and no mess. Works nicely on rabbits, bucks the wind better than HMR. Costs the same as HMR (well, ish, but it's damn close) and does a whole lot more. It's not as capable as .222 or .223, but it's much quieter. Highly recommended. Quote Link to post
