Is there anybody on here with experience of releasing fairly large number of ducks? After a bit of information, firstly if they were being fed Barley how much would you be expecting to use, a figure of bags (feed bags) per day for a 1000 would be useful. Or any other quantity you want to use!

roebuck220 offers good advice.

Personally I would feed slightly more and I would divide the feed into two offerings - AM and PM. Young ducks have a tendency to wander and two smaller feeds helps to keep them close. Leave them wanting more! Think about how you feed too - especially of you have problems with gulls. I tend to feed densely until the birds are bigger when I spread it more.

If you have suddenly lost a lot of your charges look around nearby and when you find them gently walk them back to the water - it can be done.

Food spread into the water will keep them close too as they have to dabble which takes up time. They will wander if left without food for any length of time, we fed some in morning and some in late afternoon.

I agree - into the water. I just forgot to say so!

Its a balancing act with reared duck. Overfeed and you'll need to dynamite them off the water. Underfeed and they leave. We fed them some on the edges of the water then kibbled barley away from the pond so we could drive them back. Just try different things but get them on the wing as early as possible. Thats the one time on the shoot when a wild spaniel is welcome.
