What do I look for in my first Lurcher?

Recommended Posts

Hi gang!

As with a lot of guys at my age, Iv'e got too much spare time on my hands!

Ive decided to get a Lurcher to work.

This should keep myself, and the dog fit!

Also I love rabbit etc, so will be a cheap way of keeping food on the table!

Who am I kidding? ( nothing works out cheap in the end)

Ive been told that a Lurcher with Collie cross is good, as it has the brains of the collie!

is that true.

I spos everyone has their own opinion on this one!

Ive always wanted a Saluki since I was a kid so would like a pup with Saluki in it iff poss I spos.

Whats this thing about long and short hair?

Does it realy make any difference?

As Ive said I will be looking for a pup, but is it a good idea to get a pup or a grown dog?

I dont mind the training work thats involved and I will probably get loads of advice, but as a newcomer to the breed is there anything that would defere me from a pup to start.

I thought that with a pup I would be able to imprint myself on him earlier in his life and make for a better, home and working relationship.

All ideas and hints however large or small will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I think your thinking on the right sort of lines mate, but be certain that you need to be careful and very wary when buying the new pup, make sure its from an honest source, and that it is bred from dogs that you would be happy to own yourself. Put the time in with the pup, and train it well, then enjoy the hunting

ya think you made your own choice, from what i heard can make good x, dont rush into gettin pup, find good working parents, pup brought up well. watever you do dont rush the pup, you dont want it chasing any quarry till its totally matured phsyically and mentally. good luck

best advice is to not rush you will have the dog for a long time speak to people on here and get a clear idea of what quarry ,the type of land and how often you intend to hunt in your head ,theres plenty of litters about so you are in agood position take youre time mke sure the parents are at least 5 or six years old you will know when you find the right pup atb with youre search ps i came on here and was just like you i hadnt even lamped before i found myself a dog in the for sale section hes 10mths old now and i have had a brilliant time bringing him on so much so i want two dogs now cheers matt

Thanks for the input!

Its a good thing that there are people willing to offer advice and tips.

As is obvious its all new for me at moment but well willing to learn, but not at the expence of ruining a good dog, so yeh, I am going to concider all points that are handed out to me by other more experienced owners.

Thanks again!
