I Just baught my first shotty for £50 - an old Baikal Over and Under. O/U are said to be a bit easier to get decent at, SbyS pull left or right as you fire I guess. Semi automatics make it harder for others to see your safe.

Bargans as your first shotgun are only a good idea if you trust where they are comming from and your a good judge of machinery. Low priced anything have things wrong with them so you need to undertsand the implications of the defects: how loose is still safe for example.

In the final reconing you can spend too much time and petrol money chasing bargins which turn out to be unsuitable so I think its worth paying an extra hundred to get on with the job.

Of course you need someone to start you off, a buddy, instructor or club. Shotgun safty is easy to do but also easy to overlook so you have to ask yourself, how are you going to get through the stage of incompetance that all us beginners have to endure and survive. My answer is to read a whole lot, this forum, lots of magazines and a book or two. By that time you will find you dont have to ask the question you started off with :-)

And enjoy yourself.
