It dosent matter how long in the back they are its the lenghth of leg that counts as a ped whippet is normaly short coupeld but is the fastest type for its size.

When i was racing whippets the non ped grews long flat back types were far superior in speed to the peds with their roachy little backs. Are you telling me that things have changed that much. The length of back gives a dog of that size an advantage from the point of view, that the spinal column acts like a coiled spring giving the dog greater forward impetus.

So you are saying for instance a collie whippet/grey at 21tts long in the back would be more pacyer than a good kc working whippet of around the same size??

the whippet will definately be quicker of the mark but top speed the longer dog will probs be faster top speed. i know over a short distance a whippet is the dog to beat but i have a beddy whip x bitch at 19tts and a 24 tts colliexgrey 3/4grey bull dog and he makes her look silly when on the job or at play. his mum is at least 2inch smaller and has made bigger dogs look slow but he is much faster than her. in short two dogs the same height and the same breeding the 1 with the longer back will be faster.

I personally wouldn't want a working dog taller than 26/27'' but i wouldn't want one smaller than 22/23'' purely for the work i do with them. Saying that though if i had a pup and it turned out smaller or biggr than i wanted then i would have to work with it, can't help the size they make in reality as they are mongrels essentially.

I'd echo what's been said above about the length of the dog being very important. My old lurcher was 24" TTS but much longer in the body than friend's hounds that were taller than him, he was the fastest dog I've owned by a country mile as well. He didn't have the acceleration of a Whippet but was so much faster than one flat out he made up for it within a few seconds.

What is this great obsession with some guys about the height of their dogs, any dog less than 24ats seems to scare some blokes off. There are shit loads of dogs less than 24 that can really do the buisness. Why not start looking at the length of back, conformation and feet before writing a dog off. ATB BLUCHER. :big_boss:

WELL PUT BLUCHER.,BUT I WOULDNT BOTHER LOOKING AT CONFORMATION JUST LOOK AT ABILITY.
