i havnt seen many topics of irish lads huntin hares?????????of course everyone wud like an all rounder,so i voted for that, but you hunt rabbits as your number 1 daytime quarry, true????then at night you lamp rabbits hares and killed 1 fox in your last 4 years of huntin, true?????imho i think a hare is the ultimate test daytime for a dog, which you have said yourself, true????will your dogs kill daytime consistently or ever,no so you cant say you have allrounders i have seen one of the best daytime hare bitch kill fox day and night and she picked 14 rabbits on her first and only night on lamp after rabbits and she was purchased for €200 not expensive to me

yes i hunt rabbits as my main quarry but not just lampin but ferreting too,

i dont lamp hare,s do you????

yes both dogs have taken hare and fox during the day and took a few fox on the lamp also..

have done a bit of ratting with them too just to mix it up a bit.

i do think the ultimate test for a dog is a hare but its not the only test that the dog should pass to claim one has a good dog is what im trying to say..

im not knocking your dog as for a young dog its doing well for ya.

that bitch sounds a good un but since you havent seen many hare dogs that dont say much.

mine have taken all quarry and mabey not as regular or as consistent at hares as a hare dog but for me id prefer a dog that can do a bit of everything rather than only doing one thing well and thats it.

Not a waste if you intend to match the dog, you stand to lose a lot if you get it knocked up doing other stuff.

I've run good single handed, daytime hare dogs that could lamp, ferret ,or mooch with terriers, taken pheasant and partridge. I've had good lamping, ferreting and mooching lurchers that could'nt catch

what is the meaning of an all rounder?????a dog that works day and night or a dog that takes all quarry,id like to hear peoples opinions

I can't see how a dog can be called an all rounder, if can't take daytime hares single handed.

intresting :hmm: no i dont lamp hares, that bitch is a gud un for sure and i have seen a good few hare dogs this season some not great but mostly dingers i have seen,i dont hear people sayin their daytime dogs are as good as others all rounders, most of them keep sush to stop the plod from callin round,if your dogs have taken daytime hares pm me the pics, you are the man with the camera  arent you,i think you should retract your statement callin hare dogs one trick ponies, those dogs have just as much if not more imho brains, courage and prey drive etc etc, than all rounders

for one i never said that a dog that can catch a hare is a one trick poney but only those that take nothing else and have not been trained to do all aspects of hunting.those are one trick poneys no matter how much prey drive they have.

so how can a dog that does only one thing be as good or better than a good allrounder as hence the word "allrounder"

iv nothing to prove with my dogs as i know what they do,

this is not a competition it was a geniune question for people to respond to.

for me i like my lurcher to take alot of different quarry and i also enjoy other aspects of hunting ie hunting with hawks.

i wouldnt own a dog or bird for that matter that could only do one thing as i would get bored of that after a while.

if folk are happy with having just hare dogs then fair play but not my cup of tea.

each to there own and happy hunting to all.

if a dog cant take ahare in the day or make agood show when the chances arrive there not likely to take other qaurry localy unles you have the [bANNED TEXT] weather conditions as some nites its like day time big slips big fast running land were an athelete or a [bANNED TEXT] type of dog does better than a rabbit dog etc ,or fox dont get many of them either

No disrespect mate. But if you had ever seen one you wouldent need any opinions .Day or night time pre baned hares only play a small part of great all rounder.atb. Catcherthumbs.gif
