  1. 1. ALLROUNDER OR ONE TRICK PONEY

Recommended Posts

would be interesteding to know your views on which ye lads would prefer?

i seen alot of topic,s lately especially from the irish lads about hare dog,s!!

obviously these type of dogs are run on nothing else probably due to their owners not lowering themselves to hunting rabbits.

so what are people opinions on what they would rather have.

a good allround lurcher that will lamp, ferret, take a few fox and hare or one of these hare dogs that would be in a state of shock if they saw a rabbit bolt from a hole in the ground?

Not a waste if you intend to match the dog, you stand to lose a lot if you get it knocked up doing other stuff.

I've run good single handed, daytime hare dogs that could lamp, ferret ,or mooch with terriers, taken pheasant and partridge. I've had good lamping, ferreting and mooching lurchers that could'nt catch

I would rather have a good all rounder. I dont see a point in having a dog that will take nothing but hares. Rabbits are my main targets so its defo gotta be mustard on them. If its up for a bit of ratting, joining in with the terriers so much the better. Pre ban i would of wanted it to take hares and foxes AS WELL and knock over the odd deer but nowadays of course its just rabbits and rats cos im a good boy! Lol!

I used to run hare dogs, merlin/eve.Maybe some won't lower themselve mate, but they make great allrounders, mine and mates lamped, ferreted, mooched, they were even good at pheasant.

im not doubting if the effort is put into these type of dogs they make good allrounders also but i think most keep and work them for one specific quarry, which seems a waste to me..

i suppose thats another question that it seems more for money rather than sport.

surely to be classed to having a good dog is for that dog to work at all aspects i.e lamping, ferreting e.t.c rather than just doing one thing?

as i wouldnt class a dog as being a good dog if it only took hares and nothing else.

i havnt seen many topics of irish lads huntin hares?????????of course everyone wud like an all rounder,so i voted for that, but you hunt rabbits as your number 1 daytime quarry, true????then at night you lamp rabbits hares and killed 1 fox in your last 4 years of huntin, true?????imho i think a hare is the ultimate test daytime for a dog, which you have said yourself, true????will your dogs kill daytime consistently or ever,no so you cant say you have allrounders i have seen one of the best daytime hare bitch kill fox day and night and she picked 14 rabbits on her first and only night on lamp after rabbits and she was purchased for €200 not expensive to me

Thing is your average lurcher can ,brought on right, make a very good lamper, ferreter,or moocher. It takes something special to take 3/3, 5/5, 7/7, or even more daytime hares.

i was thinkin the same thing, how many hares has supersam killed daytime pre ban,id say none
