Trigger problem...

Recommended Posts

Hi, folks.

An odd one this and one that I really should be able to solve but can't!!

I gave my old Diana 52 a service last week, new spring, clean, grease, general check over and all that guff...

Having put it all back together and putting a few shots through it, the first stage on the trigger feels really rough. It works OK, just feels crap through the first stage, stiff and notchy.

The trigger assy. comes out in one piece so I've not taken it appart, just slid it out of the action upon disasembly, then re-fitted it after a degrease, clean and lube.

It was fine before. I'm at a loss. Taken it out again and checked it but all seems fine. Wierd....

Any sugestions??

Cheers.

Edit to say... When the gun's not cocked, it feels fine, nice and smooth. It's only when it's under load that the problem's felt.

hello andy,is the 52 a side lever like the 48? did you put a washer in at the rear of the spring? remember doing a 48 a while ago when we fitted a washer at the rear of the spring it made the trigger very iffy so much sothat we removed it and just polihed the end of the spring.the washer came in the pack with the spring..

also has it got a plastic or metal spring guide changed the plastic one for a metal one from a hw80 as the platic one was wrapping under pressure and hitting the trigger sear.

Hi, mate, thanks for the reply.

Yes, the 52 and the 48 have exactly the same action, only the stock's not the same.

OK, I've not changed anything other than the spring, no extra washers or anything. It's still got the standard plastic (crap) spring guide that seems to be too small for the spring. I'd not heard of the 80 guide mod but thinking about it, it does make sence. The main for the 52's the same size and spec as an HW35, which is the same as the 80, only a little shorter.

The thing that really does not make sense to me is the fact that the first stage feels fine with the main spring at rest. It's only takeing up spring pressure within the trigger mechanism (not the main-spring) in this state, so why the hell should it change when the gun's cocked? When it's gone past the crappy feel of stage one, the release is fine...

Cheers......

you most probaly have a better idea than me as the rifle is in front of you any chance of a couple of photos of the trigger mech.as i can dig out my spec sheets to see if anything looks iffy..i know triggers can be an arse as sometimes the way they go together is not the way i think they would..

Well I've taken it to bits again, checked it all over, back together. Still sh1t!!

Nothing seems to be catching or sticking, it's clean and properly lubed. The first stage really shouldn't be affected weather the gun's cocked or not, all it's doing it takeing up pressure on a small spring. Bloody weird this....

Anyway, I've ordered an 80 spring guide for it today, so we'll see if that helps. The only thing I've changed is the spring so it may well be related. Thanks for the tip!

Sorry, no pics. I'm a total techno f-wit... :icon_redface:

Cheers.

TBH, mate, I'm not sure but I think there's a good chance. It's held in the action with 2 pins and slides out towards the rear. The piston's held back by 2 ball bearings and the safety catch is thumb opperated, plastic trigger..

Thanks for looking, mate.

No, I've not got it sorted yet. I used it today for an hour or two's plinking and the gun's plenty useable now I've got used to it a bit more. I'll wait 'till the new guide arrives, then give it another go.

At least I'm not relying on it as my main gun, I'm out tommorow and I'd have liked to have used it in the field but I'll take my 410c. I do like to take my old springers out sometimes and the .177 52 would've been my first choice for what I need to do but, hey ho....

I'll post the results when the new stuff comes.

Cheers.

great guns they are good luck with it mate

Thanks, mate.

It's the second one I've had. I had one on ticket many moons ago and sold it. Always regreted it and found another one on here last year, I'd been after one for ages but they hardly ever come up second hand. I changed the spring probably 3 or 4 times on my old one and never had any issues, so this is doing my head in!!

They're a very handy gun for those longer range shots......

Cheers.

Sorted!!!

Stripped it again today, cleaned and lubed it all again then noticed that the front adjuster screw was wound quite far out. This changes the feel of the first stage, so I thought I'd try screwing it in a couple of turns and now it works perfectly.

I still can't see how this would make such a change 'cos as I said before, I've only changed the spring and it worked fine before.

Funny things, airguns........

Many thanks to Wrowmon for your help and advice. The 80 spring guide's not turned up yet but, hey ho, at least it's sorted now.

Cheers.
