Carp Fishing

Hello, I do a lot of pike Fishing but I haven't really bothered about Carp although I have caught a couple in the past, biggest about 7 lb. I've got all the bait like pellets, boileys, bread, fake and real sweet corn, maggots and etc, but i want to know what they go crazy about, thats if they do or could it differ on the venue ? if anyone has any suggestions could they kindly put them forward, cheers.

I am writing this assuming that you dont know much about carp fishing sorry if i offend(it may help anyone else who is curious)

 

Little guide to carp baits

 

Summer

 

In the summer ive had the best results using sweet flavoured boiles in areas baited with small pellets, if its a really scorching day try stuff like bread, marsh mallow or even floater cake

flavoured dog biscuits usually soaked in corn steep liquor or something simular but dont feed to late into the evening if i am doing a 24 hour session i usually stop about about 7.30 pm or i find that the fish will be on the surface all night, if you find that the fish surface feeding through the night or even day try using a zig rig

This is easier to use at night as it is fished exacly the same as a bottom bait on alarms etc. if its an overcast day and the fish are feeding on the bottom i usualy use just a standart hair rig which can be bought ready tied but i like to tie my own (Hair rig instructions) on the hair i usually use sweet flavoured boilies such as tutti frutti or pinapple but have had results in the summer with a flavour called the source. i usually fish these near things like streams leading into the lake, airators, shallow water, island and small bays basically anywere that you think will attract carp.

 

Winter

 

I dont really fish in the winter so im just going by theory. Convensional tactics such as boilies and pellets somtimes fail to produce fish in the winter simply because the water temprature is so cold the oils and attractants in these baits dont get absorbed by the water which in turn wont attract carp so maggots and natural baits are best used the winter fished on the bottom close to deep water and other fish holding features such as gravel bars and deep water. you can find these features by using a marker float

 

Unknown venues

 

When fishing unkown venues i usually dont set up for at least an hour just walk around the lake and try to identify feeding fish locating feeding fish if you find this hard to do its just trial and error unfortunately, to do this i just use a fairly common flavour boilie such as tutti frutti with a bag of pva pellets and scan the lake cast by cast using three rods

 

 

If you have not found the fish on the first 3 sets of casts try again from cast 1 using different baits.

Sound information provided for you but I do fish winters. As the carps' metabloism is much slower and they tend to keep to deeper water and will also often feed within a fixed time span, I use heavily glugged singles or a finely balanced rig over a very small bag of pellet. I will also use a high vis pop up as a single as this can winkle out that one run.

 

One method I often use is to cut in half a bright colour pop-up and a standard colour of the same flavour. I then glue these together which produces a finely balanced single. Gppd uck and tight lines mate

corn skins squeeze middle out the piece of corn because they are very light and the carp doesnt have to suck hard and the bait is in its mouth.

carp dontmove a lot in winter apart from in rivers they. think like a carp and find where they are go with a steady approach

keep your feed to a minimum because over feeding can kill your swim

try singles no freebees at all so the cARP HAS A CHOICE OF ONE BAIT and thats the one on ya hook or hair

try rolling maggots in your hand to stun them and fews a few if they are riggling they bury themselves in the silt and they are presnted well on the bottom

ive fished sweet paste in winter that has worked for me

the simple answer for seasonal carp fishing is sweeter baits (high carbohydrate content) for summer fishing as the fish's motabolism is faster. In the colder months when the carps motablsim as slowed right down then a high nutritional bait full of amino acids is the best method. the carp wont feed on a bait in the winter if the energy expelled outweighs the nutriational reward from the food. chopped worm is a favorite of mine during winter.

Sorry to say this mate but you are completely mistaken,, it is the totally the opposite way around

 

 

Summer - high activity,, needs to be replaced, carp will seek out the easiest food source which meets there needs (amino acids),,hence a hnv bait .

 

Winter,, carps metabol has slowed wright down,, therefore needs not to feed as heavy or as oftern,, hnv are still ok too use in winter but they are far harder to digest in winter,, so a less protein bait with more soluble liquid attraction is better suited,, good roughage and low protein will speedup digestion,, hence why birdfood baits are popular winter choice,, and fishmeals are in the summer
