Ive seen a couple take fox, ive only ever owned one saluki/grey and she would not entertain fox or anything that would bite back, i kept her to a ripe old age and was a supurb bitch i was very fond of her but she just simply would not tackle them i ran her dozens and dozens of times on them through her life and she would run them every time bowl them over then stand looking at them, i ran her with other running dogs i had who were bull/wheaten/grey and good fox dogs, but would still not entertain them she would run with the other dog then stand looking while the other dog despatched it she would not tackle squirrel or rat either and would give a sharp howl like a banshee if she got bitten, still she was to date the best rabbit, hare dog i ever owned and had a good name for herself locally, even though she was a total coward with everything else, ive never owned another saluki hybred as hares and rabbits were never my main intrest and i find wheaten or bull crosses suit my interests better, like i say i have seen saluki hybreds take fox on top though and seen them take them well ive never seen a useful one used at the end of a dig etc(pre ban)be intersting to hear if anybody has though.

It's interesting that quite a few will not entertain them, in some cases it is perhaps down to bad entering but in many cases the dogs just don't have it in them.

I wonder if it down them being almost exclusively bred for hares or perhaps it is the show breeding behind many UK Salukis?

It is a strange one because many country of origin Salukis are used on Foxes, jackal and wolves.

These last two dogs take upwards of 40 foxes every winter

All the fox pics are taken in Kazakhstan, I spent some time with the two men in the last photo in sept 07. The Wolf one is in Kyrgyzstan, the Wolf would of been killing their horses and cattle. Harsh places indeed for both man and beast, 40c in the summer down to -40c in winter. :notworthy:

hedz31,we had a big 27" first cross that would take them anytime, anywhere, and at the end of a dig would pull them out like a cork and all the earth around it,he would put his head in and wait for the right moment, but he didn't mind pain, back in the 80's these dog's were not uncommon,he was a good allround dog that came from a well known saluki breeder from kirby, liverpool, atb, wirralman

Only ever seen one pure bred Saluki / Greyhound take enough foxes to be called 'a fox dog', though I suppose, those I know who run this type, would rarely want to use 'em for foxes regular anyway!

Seen plenty of 'Saluki Lurchers' that were excellent fox dogs, one was the second best fox dog i've ever had the pleasure of seeing run.

Pre-ban, if I was in the market for a fox taking dog, to be honest, a Saluki cross pup wouldn't be what i'd be looking for.
