Ruptured cruciate knee ligament

Hi all,

 

my 18 week old bull x did the above mentioned to her leg about a month ago, i have only just found out what it is and have looked it up on the net, surgery is required and as the injury is a month old arthritis will have already set in, making surgery harder and the recovery after surgery less likely to be a success. She is not insured and i have no doubt surgery will reach hundreds, has nayone else had experience of this injury? What are the chances of her haveing a decent working life? I really am at a loose end and sometimes think i should just pack up working dogs as i am always getting bad luck. Her knee is swollen and she doesn't put much weight on it. Being such a young pup it has also been hard to keep up with her socialisation and training as i can't take her out for a run about or play, she's in the house all the time except for her trips in the car, with surgery she will be confined for another 3 months.

 

What would you do if you were me, any suggestions?

Hello I’m very sorry to hear that. I am currently waiting for my second operation after rupturing my cruciate ligament after an injury playing rugby . A cruciate operation involves removing a piece of mussel from your leg and screwing it into the bones of your leg to artificially replace the ligament. It’s a big operation by any standard and no doubt will require allot of physiotherapy and aftercare. This will put then pup out of action for at least 6 months to a year at a vital time in her life when she needs training and exercise to help her on her way to becoming a working dog, There will be no guaranty that the problem will be permanently fixed especially with a dog which is going to spend its life running turning and jumping. Hi. Are you sure it's a cruciate rupture as this not common in such a young dog. More likely may be a fracture of the top of the shin bone. Has she seen a vet?

Who diagnosed the cruciate ligament damage? I would be inclined to get opinions from at least two running dog specialists with something this serious. I was recently mis- diagnosed with a torn cruciate ligament by a doctor and also an osteopath. I was coming to terms with the idea of an operation and 6 months + recovery. Luckily the third specialist thought otherwise, and after a few weeks of treatment, I'm ready to go back to work.

I hope everything goes well for the dog. My dog recovered well from the surgery and is back working in full form.

I took her to a greyhound vet a couple of weeks ago after a week had passed of her holding her leg off of the ground and all he did was feel the leg and said she had DAMAGED her knee cruciate ligament and that a couple of weeks rest would fix it, she is still not using the leg properly, it is swollen around the knee and she has little muscle on that leg compared to the other, all the signs of a ruptured cruciate when i researched it, someone else has also said ruptured on another forum, i am going to take her to another vet on monday and see what they have to say.

 

Riohog have you used this richard man yourself? Where is he based?

dont pack in c/G we all get injuries with our dogs and it sickens and disheartens us but dont let it put you off the sport your a genuine lass who works her dogs were a rare breed so keep at it and I hope your pup gets better soon

Thanks sarah, just got to me that's all, losing my 10 month old pup last year, got this littlun and this happens!! Im ok now though, just hope it gets sorted.

 

Samba i have no idea how she done it, i was out for a few hours one day and came home to her holding her back leg off of the ground, i thought she could have done it by jumping off of the sofa badly or running about and slipping on the floor, i wish i knew the exact cause.

He sorted a messy and tricky bite wound to my elderly lurcher's neck a few weeks ago. Did an excellent job and it healed up perfectly. Pricing seemed reasonable and other customers spoke highly of his surgical skills.

Have had a dog with this, the op he had was called a Tibia Plateau Leveling Ostomy he regained about 85/90% but does have some arthritis. Not a cheap option not much change from £1800 thankfully insured.
