Permisson is so hard to get and so easy to loose. IMO you are best trying to ferret for a while, a good while. I wouldnt even mention dogs at first, just have the craic with the farmer, try to find a common interest. Also a bottle of wine works wonders too. Whiskey isnt everyones cuppa, but a nice bottle of White goes down well. If you can make the farmer/keeper a friend then you have cracked it IMO....

Hi Jimmy 100, sorry pal, misread your post, sorry, yes it is a concern, I was on a forum rfecently saying I was concerned that my Lexy hasnt been on the back of a rabbit yet, im not panicking yet as Im only now stepping her training up, she's about 11 Months and ive just started encouraging her to jump whilst out walking, she course as a pup used to jump to get her meal, nice offer mate, I appreciate that Thankyou, Born Hunter, Ive recently just moved out of Nottinghamshire into Derbyshire bout 3 Miles, I live in a town called Ilkeston now, and there is nothing that I know in terms of regualr shoots and opportunities for beaters for miles and miles, I could be wrong, it's a path I am prepared to take to try and get someone to trust and believe in me, Thanks again for posting, Craig

Are there no shoots local to you then? Where abouts are you in notts? I could ask a few keepers if they want an extra beater, no promises though but if i heard of a space come up and you are a genuine lad like you appear i could put your name forward...

 

Im the only person with ferreting permission on a fairly large local shoot as im the only one trusted, that permission took years to earn and im proud of how i am regarded by the shoot land owners, keeper and shoot captain. Its led to terrier work and lamping as well as shooting. The shoot i help the keeper on and have permission to basically do anything i got through beating and proving to be up for any job which is appreciated. Its a rare thing to be aloud to take a running dog on a shootday in the beating line and run what you want, also having the regular guns etc coming up to you telling you where they saw the fox on the 2nd drive bolt from.

 

Everyone knows permission is hard won but i think alot who are without dont realise just quite hard won.

they wont want many beaters this time of year :clapper: you may aswell just forget keepered land they do it all themselves!!! there is land everywhere where anyone can go on and no one cares about it its just getting out there and finding it that you need to do. i have permission but there is alot better land around me thats worth the odd visit

D arcy, my ignorance even surprises me, I didnt realise arible farmers would have a concern over a working dog, I should of had my finger on the pulse a bit more, it's just my knowledge of ferreting is limited (like Ive said, if noone is there to show you...you never learn)and just cos I have ferrets dont mean I ll hook up with permission, I dont want this thread be violins out cos one fella cant find permission, I wanted to throw it open to see what you's lads think, and Im glad I did, as it's had a good response and no...well not much argueing

I would seriously consider getting a couple of ferret kits this summer pal, i garuntee you will get permission for them sorted by the time they are ready to enter and if you are unsure about the ins and outs of working ferrets someone will come and give you a hand till your confident. Hell, if you go out your way to get ferrets and permission ill come and accompany you for your first few jaunts! Derbyshire aint too far away for me for a few trips. Owning and looking after ferrets couldnt be easier either. Before you know it the farmer will let you bring you lurcher along with you and soon enough you will be out lamping and possibly other stuff depending how she does in the field

 

Dont despair pal, itll come and when you do get that first permission you wont loose it because you will know how hard it was to get. Well thats me out of advice and help, the rest down to you. Have a think about it, next season is a little way off yet...

Excellent advice Hunter, I have 100% taken it on board, I dont want to come across as a saint but i deffo wouldnt loose it when I get it, there's alot of positivity and I feeled buoyed by it all, to have another go and keep trying, Ive been pm'd by some lovely peole offering advice and I greatly appreciate your help, I hope any others in my position will get something from this thread as Ive said it's not about me and my dog, I bet there are thousdands of fella's like me with a burning desire to follow our country sports heritage and roots and not just leave it to select few, and I for one want to give my children the opportunity to have the memories I have, Cheers

ive got the same deal going with my local shoot me and the dog beat on sat!! and sunday i can ferret the areas we did the drives through!! and i lamp it during season aswell !!

Try thinking out of the box.

Instead of going knockin on doors think where farmers congregate ie sheep and cattle markets.

Get yourself to Bakewell and Derby on market day.

Ask if you can put a poster up on the notice board and have a word with the auctioneer to mention it.

Get in the pubs where the farmers go after market and start some conversations up.

I asked for permission this week on an estate not to far from me. The keeper said that he gave all the rabbits to the lads who did the beating for him. Ok thats fine i said. Then he said would i like to do some beating for him. I said yes. I gave him my number and hopefully one thing will lead to another.

I'll second that waidmann , nearly had me in f*****g tears last night , Never knew that permission was such a big issue over there, never had permission anywhere , ever, lads just carry on over here , nobody gives a feck..best of luck..
