Does he need to see a bunny until then,,??

Recommended Posts

Going to start a young dog next season on his own, he's done feck all yet, hasn't seen anything, recall is good, retrieve is bang on, basic manners are tip top, he will be used for the lamp, mostly, by the time he starts he will be in good shape physically i hope, he will have the ground work covered by then ,gates, wire, livestock etc,,My question is, Does he need to see a rabbit between now and the first rabbit he catch's next season..given that ,he's a lurcher and the rabbit is a small furry mammal which he will chase, The chase and strike are his department so cant help him there..droppers are pointless too , im banking he doesn't need to see one..

my self i wound'nt take him mooching if your only going to use him for the lamp because he mite start useing his nose when he is out at night witch we all no is a big  id say just keep up with the training and geting him fit then just before the season starts take him out for a few easy sitters walk him right up to them and let the rabbit run make sure the dog has seen it then let him go then hopefully there will be no looking back but thats jmo!! atb byker

all my previous dogs have been for lamping only, never took them mooching about during the day, first bunny they ever see is on the lamp, weather they are watching an experienced dog,or walked up to their very first, and iv never had a yapper yet or a young dog that was not capable of catching it.

once you have an established lamp dog, then you can start doing a bit more with them, this is only what i do,many will say right or wrong but works for me,sounds like you know what your doing mate, stick with it and good luck for the new season

Its madness never to take the dog mouching about on ground you intend to lamp how is the dog going to get used to different situations he will come up against. Are you just going to walk him on the roads till its time to get him lamping????

coming from a bloke who freely admits one of his dogs is shite, you do it your way mate ill do it mine,no they dont only get road walked, they get all the free running they need, just not in areas infested with rabbits, and as for situations they come across, once im in the field surrounded by a hedge, they only need to know one thing, catch the bunny,

Itook a 10mth old pup out to let him have a look down the beam this week as i like to put the seed in there mind before you put them up for summer , luckily he went on the second rabbit . Years ago i kept a dog to just walking the streets till he was 10mth and he went straight down the beam and killed the first two rabbits he ever saw , goes to prove if its in them it will come out ! .

So would you keep a dog away from the countryside?? were would you walk a dog that some thing might not make it run even the parks are full of squirrels do you implement keeping it on a lead till its ready to lamp.

Each to his own but i do know lads that keep them on the lead till ready to lamp , so as not to risk getting a dog that hunts up .

trouble with some people mate, you have to keep repeating yourself,no i do not keep it away from the countryside, just dont take it to areas with rabbits, remembering the pup doesnt know what they are anyway,so it would not actively be seeking them, yes the parks are full of squrrels, but rare to find them right out in the open, what with the general dog walkers ect, hardly likely to get a good course on one thats gonna test the pup to its limit and encourage it to open up eh,and no do not implement keeping it on a lead,as i have said, its only different opinions and methods than some, doesnt make it wrong, just works for me thats all.

im bringing on a pup now that i want to use as a daytime ferreting partner, and also lamp dog, with this dog i will take a different approach, all be it slowly and steadily, the best i can,if it all goes to shit only got myself to blame not the input of others on how im doing it wrong, not everything is about an arguement mate
