Despatching fox in trap?

Recommended Posts

Hello people

Bit of advice needed please. Have ordered a cage trap to deal with my resident chicken killer and was wondering how you go about disposing of a fox in a cage trap. The only gun I have is an air rifle which obviously isn't going to do the job so was wondering what other options I had. Thanks

You really do need to find someone with a .22 rimfire or a .410 and 2" cartridges or silencer before you think about setting it or you could find yourself in a bit of a fix.

A friend of mine many years ago lent one of his traps to a bowling green groundsman with strict instructions to call him when a fox was caught. having heard nothing for a while he turned up to see what was going on only to be told that several foxes had been caught .

"How did you kill them ?",he asked .

The groundsman -who was apparently quite a big chap shrugged and said that he had'nt wanted to bother my mate so he strangled them !!!

Seriously NOT RECOMENDED

its good that you asked beforehand, but if you dont have the means to dispatch humainly, dont use the fox trap, apply for a SGC, and when you get the visit from the firearms officer, simply explain you want a 410 moderated (hushpower) for humaine dispatch of foxes caught in a live trap cage, I did just that, and had my licence within 2 weeks,

410 hushpowers seem to hold there money whatever age, picked mine up for £200

if you dont want to go down that route, try peeing around the garden, it sometimes works

Thanks urban fox but I'm in N. Wales so I'm guessing thats too far! Think I'm looking at finding a friendly local farmer then although what exactly is an SGC stubby and would any convictions for youthful drunken brawling stop you getting one? (would use an embarrassed smiley at this point but ain't figured how to do them yet!)

If you are in North or East London area, I will be available to dispatch what you catch. Just cable tie the traps up over the weekend. I am available Mon-Fri.

Very quiet, discreet and minimum fuss guaranteed.

you forgot to add, that if anyone did do this, they would need to provide food and water for the fox until dispatch

Would it not have been a good idea to think about how you were going to dispatch any caught foxes before you bought a trap?

You are going to need to either get yourself a gun licence and a shotgun, or find someone local to you who is capable of dispatching the fox for you.

No, I think he meant cable tie them over the weekend (either closed or open), so that they can't catch anything. yes.gif

Thanks John for pointing that out. I thought for a minute it was my grammar.

All of my traps are cable tied up over the weekend so that nothing can get trapped, meaning 'they are deliberately left securely open', as I only do Monday to Friday's, unless there is an emergency.

Traps are also pre-baited over the weekend to encourage foxes to feel comfortable in entering for the forth-coming week.

Traps will always contain food and are checked at least 3 times a day by myself or preferably by the client who will agree and sign to say this will be done. This is to ensure that non-target animals can be immediately released and that any trapped foxes can be dispatched swiftly, humanely and do not endure prolonged stresses which would contravention of various laws and legislation with regards to animal welfare.

Most foxes will sit still once trapped. Its the cat's you need to worry about. They go absolutely crazy in the brain and move 100MPH+ when you release them, watch your fingers !!! ohmy.gif

Just a thought, but wouldn't it be a good idea to padlock the traps open in urban areas? What would happen if some dick were to come along and cut your cable ties off and reset the trap?

For the cost of a few locks, I would want to be certain that I could prove that I'd taken 'all reasonable measures' if I was in your position.

No offence intended; I know that you are good at what you do, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Thanks matt. As the traps I place are always in 'secure areas' I have never ever considered that, but now I will thumbs.gif

Demonstrating 'due diligence' would be my only defence in Court if that ever happened and I was being prosecuted.

A quick digital photo wouldn't go a miss either.

Good comment. Thanks. smile.gif
