Christening the .223... and then some!

Recommended Posts

After picking up and zeroing my .223 at the weekend I was keen to show it some action  FD was a man with a plan and we arranged to have a look out with the lamp. I say a 'look out' but thats actually a massive understatement as a lot of ground is covered at a pace that sits somewhere between walking quickly and running slowly until the battery goes flat  and thats a long way on a lithium battery

Being a eager and inconsiderate b*****d I arrived early so plans were brought forward and we arrived at the farm to a pleasant spring evening and the opportunity to have a look for an early fox. As the light was fading FD noticed a dark blob in the corner of a field bordering a thick, scrubby copse. Being as it was so still we both assumed it was a roe couching for the evening with its back to us but it looked to small. We got a little closer and were then rumbled and up hopped a MUNTY :icon_eek: There wasn't much time to piss about as I've heard these are notorious for being 'flight of foot' so its was up on the sticks and bang - the 55gr softpoint (one of my last two left after zeroing my rifle) took her in the neck at 140 yards - My FIRST MUNTY :yahoo:

Although this is the first Munty I have seen in the flesh I always thought they were constantly on the move - something which FD himself always thought until then although judging from the state of her feet it probably had something to do with them

Apparently thats what your toe looked like Martin before you had it sorted

It was dark by the time we got to the car and dropped her off so out came the lamp and we headed off in the opposite direction. The local fox population has been well schooled on this patch and the fields were mostly full of hares lolloping around - you had to pretty much kick them out the way in places  A set of eyes caught the lamp through some wispy grass on the other side of a fence but fecked off at the squeel withought looking back... not falling for that old chestnut :( Carying on the beam caught some eyes well out in a field - decided against calling this time I got down on the bipod and cranked up the magnification to 12x but it still looked bloody small in the scope

I love this cartridge

We paced her out at 200 yards - a big Vixen irrespective of season

Cheers again FD - I really am chalking up the I.O.U's now mate :icon_redface:

Nice pictures and write up, but i am not going to feel sorry for you, no matter how fast you say he made you walk :tongue2:

I shot a roe doe with feet like that, "carpet slipper" is what I have been told it's called. There seems to be some confusion as to what causes it, as i have been given several versions. Vitamin K difficiency was one, and living on soft ground was another. The only thing is I shot my roe doe on the base of Bredon Hill, and it is definately not boggy or swampy ground.

Any ideas what causes it?

No problem Local mate .Glad you got your first munty but sorry for wearing you out you whinger ,lol. That was the very first munty i had ever seen couched ,ever. The 'aladins slippers ',i think are just a fact of life for deer ,not caused by any one thing and thankfully not very commwen anywhere in the country.

Cheers fellas, never one to complain about a swift pace but I had some thermals on at the time as was close to passing out throught heat exaustion more than anything else... Plus the fact the rifle weighs a b*****d ton - that'll learn me! Seriously though what a great night!

The Munty is chilling in the fridge as we speak mate althought I never appreciated what a b*****d they are to skin...

Not much left of the face on Ratchers' Charlie! Our Vixen certainly had a belly full by the looks of things althought the munty had only a single calf.

Here are all four feet with the hind ones on the outside. Strange that those on the left side of the animal - the foreleg especially, are effected the worst :hmm:

I bodged the skinning a bit as I got to the stage where you just go 'oh fuckit!' and get the knife out  the backs of the legs was the worst bit :wallbash:
