Confused By Calibers

Ehm :icon_redface:

Wonder if anybody can help, I'm getting totaly confused by different calibers and was wondering if anybody has the time to explain?

I think a caliber rating of .22 would equate to a projectile with a diameter of 5.6mm but what the hell is the difference between this little lot?

.222

.223

.22-250

6.5 x 550

Completely baffled :hmm:

6.5x55 is bigger.

It can be confusing. it doesn't help that some cartridges are designated in Metric and some are imperial.

The .222,.223 and 22-250 all shoot the same diameter bullet (.224) but have different case sizes. the .222 is the smallest the .223 is very slightly bigger and the .22-250 is the biggest of the 3, still shooting a .224 cal bullet but uses a necked down .243 case.

other .22 centrefires in rough order of size.

.22 Hornet

.22 Fireball

.222

.223

.22ppc

.22 BR

.22-250

.220 swift

The other caliber you mentioned is the 6.5x55 and is in Metric. it meens it has a 6.5 calibre bullet and a 55mm case. other examples of this are 7x57,9.3x74.

there are even calibers that are a combination of both metric and imperial. 7mm08(.308 necked down to 7mm).

Hope this helps. Ezzy

not so -the 22-250 is based on the .250 savage case hence-.250 there is a 22-243 based on the .243 case but not very popular.

Today all "22 centrefires" use bullets of the same diameter, 0.224". The different rounds, ie .22Hornet .222, .223, 22-250, 220 Swift . . .use different cartridges with different chamberings. The 22-250 has, I think, the biggest capacity of any commercial cartridge, although the Swift may still be bigger. .243 is essentially the next step up, at 6mm bullet diameter. 6.5 is the next.

Not very helpful I'm afraid bro. This really is a complex subject! If you want advice on specific calibres get back to us.
