It should be doing better than that, mate. What groups are you getting from your PCP?

If it's new, it'll take a few hundred shots before it's properly bedded in.

If your kit's all good, it could be down to you. Are you used to springers 'cos they're not so easy to shoot as PCPs. The way you hold them is the key, they need a light, consistant hold so they can recoil in their own way shot to shot otherwise your shots will be all over the gaff.

Cheers.

That's actually fine mate. You are just getting used to the gun, your groupings will improve a bit with practice and the rifle bedding in. I have the same gun. On a good day I can get inch groups out to 35 yards. If its not a good day I keep to 30 yards. Inch groups at whatever range you can get them to are accurate enough for hunting as long as you stick to that range.

Hi Pest,

The HW57 is a good rifle in its own right mate and if in perfect working order will shoot some really good groups at 25 yards.

As Andy as said the rifle will need bedding in and given time to settle down to produce its best results.

I still feel though at 25 yards it will produce better results than your ¾ inch groups without being fully bedded in.

Going from a PCP to a springer catches a lot of people out and they find that their accuracy as changed massively for the worst.

This is due to them picking up some really bad habits when shooting a PCP, these being hold of the rifle, follow through etc.

Like Davy says with some practice and going back to basics you will improve them group sizes buddy.

Good luck

Hey PH

Now don't go off and getting all  at me for the next bit, I'm not having a go at you at all  its just a bit of constructive advice on how to put your sport/hobby across in a more positive way

I personally think you should refere to you gun as either a gun, or a tool because "weapon" gives out the wrong impression  (its ONLY a weapon if you were to use or INTENDED to use it to cause alarm, fear or harm to another individual or another persons property  )

As for your current grouping, I agree that they are not too bad at all, taking account of it possibly needing to bed in, finding best pellet for that barrel and you are getting used to it :gunsmilie:

The more you work or should I say practice with it, you will learn how the gun likes to be held, where the ideal hold positions are and as you get used to feeling the recoil, I can promise you your grouping will become tighter :toast:

I have litterally grouped 5 pellets less than 10mm at 30 yards with my Beast, but I started off with groups well over what you mention.

Took a good while for me to learn the gun and choose the best pellet for it

One thing I have found though, If I stay off the springer for a while my groups open up wide again  and it takes a few days of practice to get them back to decent grouping so if I want to shoot bunny I spend a fair bit of time with the paper for a few days. I also find that my frame of mind has a lot to do with accuracy and a springer. So I generally use it during summer, when I'm more relaxed.

My pistol scores have really suffered as I've barely used em over the last year or so

I took 3 gold awards a couple of years ago for pistol shooting, now I wouldn't even place!

Hope that helps a little and encourages you to shoot the springer more often, to help keep things lovely :boogie:

Yeah in the eyes of the law, if it is your intention to alarm, hinder or cause panic, fear or injury or death to another or anothers property (be it his/her car, or pet bunny or even poach vermin on land that you don't have permission to be on) then yes they see it as a weapon  if you are shooting a comp, or targets or vermin on land (or water) where you do have permission and you dont let the pellet stray outside the boundery, then its hard for the law to define it as a weapon. Until they can prove its use is as a weapon against another or his property, its simply a tool or a gun

My favourite analogy is:

I used to use my steel Schaefer pen as a tool to inflict great pain on our less desirable clients when I was controling them.

I undoubtedly caused pain (hence harm) with it (so it was actually being used as a weapon), but could they call my writing implement a weapon in a court of law?

On Wednesday evening, a local Police officer confiscated my expensive Realtree lock knife.

His grounds were its an illegal locking knife weapon (among other reasons that I will not go into). I sort of laughed at him and said "I think you need to go read up on your literature Sir." he said "Why's that?" he wasn't being cocky or anything and neither was I. this is how the conversation went.

ME == "For you to be able to class that as an illegal weapon, it has to meet TWO criteria"

PC == "Oh eye, whats that then?"

ME == "It has to be carried in Public"

PC == "Which it was!"

ME == "AND I would have to have it without a lawfulf reason for carrying it"

PC == "And you think you have?"

ME == "I was on PRIVATE land not public, and I can produce written authorisation for you should you wish to see it; there is your 1st error Sir"

PC == "But you had to carry it to that land"

ME == "I did indeed, in fact sir I carried it through public streets and roads, but I have the lawful excuse that I needed that particular knife in order to cut down some small branches so that I can set up a more permanent hide for my duties as pest control operative on that private land and my large hand saw would have been unsuitable for the small gaps I was needing to cut "

PC == "Okay you win, but you will have to call in at the station when you are......"

and I shall leave it at that, but rest assured I will this week collect my tool from the local police station

It all comes down to positive wording and a positive attitude

Seeing as this thread has already got somewhat side tracked I wonder if anybody knows, does the HW57 come in two barrel lengths? There was only one on offer where I bought mine. Various people have said HW57K, mine only says HW57 near the loading gate. So is there 2 barrel lengths i.e standard and carbine or do people just assume the HW57 must have a K after it because the barrel is short anyway?
