so you would wait till 2 years bull shit mate , missed the best part of the dogs life to get game sense and what mnners do you need to catch a roe preban or course ahare pre ban or lamp a dozen or so rabbits

in response to your question on manners my dogs are taught to work off the slip they know not to go until I give the go ahead if I didn't have these manners they would run the first thing they see when the lamp goes on somthing I won't stand for!! I can recall my dog even if he's on a bunnies arse somthing I'm very proud of!! This is a very handy trick in certain situations!! You may not like this but it's my style and it works for me!!!

well i voted 8 to 12. but my 1st pup i had i didnt have a running dog so she got enterd at 4 months and got her 1st rabbit at 6 months (this has done her no harm)but the pups i have now will not be getting enters till about 11 mothts. let them be pups for a while. and there just not as mature as there mom was at 6 months. might be because there is to pups living together?

i do a lot of both off lead and on lead training with a pup before it comes of age, which to me is about 10/11mths but mine tend to have alot of hound blood in them and are maybe not as hardy as some crosses. i introduce pup to its quarry from 6mths onwards with a carcass from another dogs kill, then i start to bring it along with another dog on the hunt.

im lost with some of youse guys on here with dogs etc what does a mother cheetah do with cubs gives them young animals to get them going same with other predators ,the only reason i can see holding a dog back is to stop him on forbidden qaurry at times with a down wistle or shout , but in general get them out as puppies learning nature and its smells ,its not rocket sceince to enter pups and dogs , im lost at times with the way people do things on a hunting channel ,hunting is aprogressive thing you learn as you go along like a cheetah or any other animal , you dont learn unless you have him out put him in places to get game and teach him and take him were there are game ,ive never had to teach adog to chase its bred in them or should be you just hone them into chaseing when young but you dont over tax them etc

hardly ever youse aleash on a dog ,one trained ive trained lurchers to stop etc on command , used to stop one on vioce one on wistle ,but didnt catch mew more game , stop is agood thing for alurcher ,but me i want it to go through hell to pull the game if possible or once he gets a brain learn what he cant catch and what he gets arow of , you sound like a gundog man not areal lurcher guy ,the sit and stayers are all [bANNED TEXT] but i would rather have adog that i dont talk to much apart from hiss and my hands free to walk and jump afence something youl, getonce your dog calms down any way how long you been into lurchers and hunting with them

cooper i to have trained dogs to be called of qaurry , heel stay fetch drop with catch but the dog that is the most obeident isnt always the best bag filler i live on bigggish land and they have to realy run to catch the qaurry some nites , and some of the best working dogs were not the type you could sit stay fetch stop etc , i would rather have a bit control and alot more game at times

Whin i understand what your getting at, but dogs arent wild animals, they are domesticated workers.

As such they need to know their boundaries and be well trained in the field and socialised to humans.

If i wanted my dogs to only know that they have to kill anything that i send them for, then i would say your method would probably suit.

I however like my dogs to be well trained and used to all different environements before i let them have a go at live game.

If a good dog only had to kill its quarry there would be pleanty good dogs, there is so much more to a good working lurcher than just the kill, which is just the end result.

My ground is dotted with houses overlooking my fields I have been lucky enough to gain the trust and respect from the local farmers and landowners as a decent lurchermen!! A respect long lost through years of fools terrorising the area and livestock!! I'm closley watched by people around who are keen to stop the type of hunting I do!! So I can't afford any mistakes by my dogs!! I appreciate your opinions and respect them but my area is this way and I have to respect that if I want to continue working my dogs around there!!! Sorry to hijack the thread lads sure your boored of me now!! ATB

of course there are livestock , other dogs ,ferrets , but i dont want to harnes a dog so he starts thinking , to look at owner before i make a catch , i trained a few like that ,i like to go out on anite , dog is walking close by i see him winding something lamps on bang qaurry done and dusted ,running dogs are for catching game tell me a dog that preban ,that pulls game ,not rabbits ,any were , will catch or try and catch were ever you work it ,isnt a predator ,thye are hard to live with but well in the [bANNED TEXT] situation they do there job , me a bit of obeidence and natural ability is the best way for me ,i dont train a dog to sit heel ye , jump ye , fetch ye , come in ye ,and if he takes the piss i give him a row ,my first prefrence is abit traing then catch game ,and not much more realy if i have to go back to a high standard of obeidence like i use to do ,would get bored me its the catch always will be and work as ateam

ive no houses and basicaly do what i please nowadays ,not any stock , just game but they are hard to catch at times, at certain times of the years we can drive farm after farm on permision doing pest control then walk the rest of the year ,the dogs i had for obeidence are not the dogs i would say catch localy all the time ,diffrent land ,were i hunt its pure running land at times no stock fences and big slips as the years goes on ,diffrent style of hunting ,

I think alot are getting mixed up with actual entering and climatiseing them with the enviroment they are going to get hunted in holding a lurcher back from free running in woodland till its 12 month hold will imho end in disaster. My beddy/grey non ped whippet was took out into the working enviroment as soon as she had her second jabs and has been allowed to free hunt in woodland and as up to date not got as mutch as a scratch.

thats what i did with my new pup. i have had her out mooching since 12 weeks, she is 17 weeks today and i have just noticed her starting to chase birds this morning. her pace is picking right up and she is starting to venture out further in woodland etc.

My pups start themselves on rabbits/hares, as they run loose. They have chased 100s by the time they are 7mo. I start hauling them with the older dogs for coyotes at 7-8 mo. If they arent fired up by 12 mo...they are just fired.

Take care.
