  1. 1. At what age do you personally start a young dog on live game

This is for you to state what age you start a yound dog on quarry, NOT a post for you to tell everyone that your method is the best.

I realise that every dog is different and should always be considered so this is just a general opinion of the average age you start a dog working.

more or less agree with what your saying ,you dont need to teech a sighthoung how to run thats instinctive ,

yeah let the youngsters have a look see ,bit of ferreting bushing ect ,but i wouldnt run a dog on fast stuff till it was over 12 months mybe abit longer in some cases they defenatly wont learn anything in the kennell so get them out mooching about sights sounds and smells ;)

i choose 8-10months obviously every dog is different in how fast they mature a good dog man should be able to see when his dogs ready for a few runs little confidence building nights with say a few rabbits and ending on a high with a catch allways worked for me but some people have different methods as long as it works for you and your dog thats the important bit ,i would never dream of putting a youngster that still has puppy legs against a full grown rabbits that would surley out pace a young dog leading to frustration which in turn causing the dog to open up thats my opinion any way

over by in the some parts of the usa, there no game to chase apart from jack rabbits how the hell do you think they take them out when they are 7 month old maybe 8 let them get into a few kills and as they develop they catch more game and there stamina and speed gets better, and they watch there pups not getting run to hard ,but they only breed of treid and tested stock there were the diffrence lies i think generaitions of working stock who are bred to run

it makes sence to be safe if you dont own the parents never bred the parents grand parent as you dont no whats in them at times ,but if you have been at the game showing them game young has more good pionts than bad i hate seeing a young strong unworked pup pulling acting mad cause he hasnt had the chances ,, you have to no tyour dogs tho and how they are bred and what there parents are like to start early regulary

AS you have so rightly said,.this is an entirely personal matter,.and like most things in the lurcher world,.it realy is a case of 'each to their own'..

.Indeed,.my own philosophy has always been,.'you do what you like,.and I'll do what I like',..end of.... :

Personally,...I like to have my lurcher pups out at 12 to 16 weeks....

I want them to see EVERYTHING.....

I want them to understand exactly what my job (and their future job) is all about,...and they have much to learn....

These days,..I am only a ferreter,...but I maintain that this method of catching rabbits can often present a lurcher with a whole load of awkward problems...and it is important that we understand one another..

The business of rabbit control,..(for financial gain) is frequently frustrating,.and I must have a canine partner that is perfectly in tune with me,.and this sometimes takes a while,.SO,.best get 'to it',..ASAP...

Difficulties can occur with lurchers,.NO MATTER how careful you are,.and disregarding obvious stupidity and over-matching a young jukel,...the 'end result' is often in the lap of the Gods,..so,.what will be,.will be....

I prefer to get em out young,...it works for me.... :drink:

All the best,..CHALKWARREN... :D

[bANNED TEXT] you have stated why you work them young ,probaly in abetter manner than me as im less tolerant , at times ,i cant see the piont of holding pups back if you can take him out with a trained partner at times and let him see in a sensible manner ,do the best mexican boxers start young snooke pool running , etc ,it makes sense ,but you must have agood tutor and sensible hand in the matter THATS WHENIT GOES ALL WRONG

No I was stating that until my pup was ready and under my control I wouldn't enter it to game however long it took me!! I was meaning it as in I don't have a specific age I enter them I enter when I feel they are ready and I have control of them!! You allways look to make people seem foolish whin and I don't understand why???

I think alot are getting mixed up with actual entering and climatiseing them with the enviroment they are going to get hunted in holding a lurcher back from free running in woodland till its 12 month hold will imho end in disaster. My beddy/grey non ped whippet was took out into the working enviroment as soon as she had her second jabs and has been allowed to free hunt in woodland and as up to date not got as mutch as a scratch.
