whin 463
i read about the guys who start them at a year old on game me personaly the minute they can fetch a skin , heel up and be a bit biddable they are out with there older freinds , at nite , got 7 month pup 10 month pup 17 month big pup all on the way to becoming good dogs ,at the game , they are out lamping seeing the odd bit of game, out hunting they no whats on ,the no whats game ,long before there legs are up to catch ,game ps whippets are not well bred lurchers so i cant vouch for them ,and no were are they gone be as good as wellbred lurcher maybe diffrent , i had a three qaurter grew whippet treated her the same out as a youngster and was catching game 8 or 9 months by 12 month was capable to do serous work , but if i was a beginer i would go for the safe way at times as mines are all bred from working dogs i know and seen ,work, i like taking apup out on netted rabbits, lamping game at nite and getting the feel of whats to be asked ,only way ,i rarely talk to dogs at nite just a hiss , and they learn from there siblings easier than any man can teach them at times ,go back to the old edrd mags with marc c glenn with his old beardie danny he was a clever guy had him at hunting trails and was a very good dog as apup , 13 months , so you can learn dogs young but not running flat out ,i think alot of youse dont understand about dogs etc Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
"i think alot of youse dont understand about dogs etc " Nae bother. I can only comment on what i have seen and witnessed myself, dogs left untill they are mature physically and mentally are the only ones who have the chance of consistently catching there game. Running a puppy on live quarry imo is ridiculous and the only thing the dog will learn is it cant catch them (consistently). This IMO leads to dogs yapping, and dogs not trying like they should. I am not going to enter into a slagging m,atch over this, i have stated my methods and opinions, and I would be gratefull if people would respect that. What is the big rush to have a dog working consistently at 12 months? All these people with there big ideas and opinions should have pleanty of other dogs to work whilst there puppy is being trained-socialised-growing-left to be a pup. Me personally, i have only space for one or two dogs, and that space cannot be taken up by yappers and jackers. I will try and put a poll up of what age other people enter there dogs if i can work out how to, it should be interesting. FTB Quote Link to post
whin 463
i see your scottish come through to the borders and see some young dogs working , all under 18 months ,my good freind one a coursing comp with a young dog and he never jacked i had abitch ten who caught as a 7 month old youngster and still mad as a hatter at 10 for work and at nine with pins in her leg ,as she got knocked down ,still caught bolting rabbs ,go a few dogs here and they all got started the same way ,bring a pup along and ille show you how we do it with young dogs and older siblings , no need to [bANNED TEXT] a paragraph on it ,itsnoy a debate , another thing never had to let droppers go for pups as some do ,what do you run what type of dog , Quote Link to post
whin 463
there no big thing but i want adog to be mentaly switched on long before he is realy mature so he runs within his self , so i want a dog that by the time he is able to run as amature dog , he is switched on already ,il say no more but fight the ban pop through and show me your dogsand il take you out with acouple of you dogs Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
I run collie/greyhound/saluki/whippet tyopes on a variety of game. And WTF is it with people wanting to meet up and prove themselves, i couldnt care less what other people thaught of my dogs, i just work away quietly myself and they do everything i ask of them. I suggest you do the same. FTB 3 Quote Link to post
whin 463
so do i work my dogs on avareity of game ,and meeting up with genuine hunting guys nothing wrong with that and swapping methods as the only way you learn is seeing it done diffrent ways not on a computer and if you have decent dogs commend you on the way they run or are trained ,im not a computer hunter like most on these site bud , bring your dog along and let me see your methods always willing to learn or teach genuine guys who walk the walk no time for pretenders etc Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
I have no time for pretenders either pal, and i dont feel the need to prove my dogs to anyone. I work amongst a close group of friends and we have our own way of working. It works for us, and thats all that matters. What you do with your dogs is none of my business, and in todays climate i wouldnt be meeting anyone anywhere or telling them anything about my dogs. FTB 3 Quote Link to post
whin 463
its not about proving your dogs ,or it would be a competition ,got loads of good permision be nice to see your methods and what stamp of dog you work and me i coudnae give a dam about current climates hopefully it will change if we get anew goverment, had my share of current climate with the law and there ways ,and well good to see other methods, were all running dog men some more keener than others , and keeping it close together shit well thats how they banned it cause we all thought we can get away with the hunting etc , improud of the dogs and the hunting and would go the extra mile to get the laws reapealed ,your heading is figh the ba but you get asked out with huntig guys and its ,a big thing to have awalk out .no prob see ya Quote Link to post
