taking a dog oot an showing him his future vocation is a world apart from working a puppy :whistling:

an for the guy that doubles his puppy up on the lamp with an older dog, what a fecking laff :clapper:

what so funny about a young dog running with an experienced dog. its how all predators teach there cubs. no wonder why so many people dogs are so domesticated and turn an easy job into something difficult at the end of the day your unlocking a dogs natural hunting instincts and there development depends on you i think i'l choose the same way as a fox or a wolf or a lion non of these need a hand to feed them and all are the best hunters. prefere to unlock it the natural way if dogs wernt domesticated do you think they would wait till 12 months to catch there prey. no chance. it doesnt do them no serious harm. now whos laughing

Started taking by beddy/whippet out at 7 months with the air rifle and lamp. He caught two runners so I thought that was him away. Next few months nothing but yap in frustration so had a two month break. First night back out, caught 4 lamp shy rabbits, only yapped at the first one. Second trip back out, chased a rabbit though a hedge into a tarmac car park, smashed a dew claw. :( Back to square f*****g one! :wallbash:

Still haven't been able to start him off properly again, I reckon if I hadn't had a break with him I'd have been stuck with a useless, yapping lump of a dog.

All dogs are different though.

the break didnt cure the yapping though it never does once a yapper always a yapper they will always have it in them to do it again

im still laffing, lol in 1 breat you saying tae the other guy your wrong for starting them young....

but in the next reply you say its best to double them up while 1 is a puppy????????? :icon_eek:

the way i see it, is by all means take a puppy oot, let it WATCH, SMELL, HEAR AN FEEL, wats going on around it

but to double a puppy up with an adult dog that is only intrested in the bunny, is just oot an oot careless imo

why not wait another bit an run him single????

doubled up for bunnys :clapper:

obviously your blind ive stated ever since joining this site im pro starting young but always with an adult dog around otherwise whats the point taking a pup young whats it going to learn before you comment please read whats being said so again whos laughing twice now you've said something silly and incorrect. and what i mean by running double is the experience dog runs all the time and the pup dog joins in when young when he wants running him single as a pup would sure for deffinatly do harm as your not gaining anything apart from showing the pup he cant catch but with the experienced dog say killing 6-8 rabbits out of 10 that gives him plenty of time to get his mouth round it and help with the retreive now dogs arnt soft when you take them young as soon as the pup hears the squeal they run straight over to the catch and lock on. and have a go on them this again is helping train them and shows them what they get at the end. read all post then come back with a comment atb jamie

He may running the dog on a golf course for all you know, still going to tell him to start it at 5 months or 8 weeks or whatever?

My goodness their is some nonsense spoken on here.

Just leave the dog untill its a year lad, no dog ever got ruined by holding it back but plenty got ruined by starting too early.

YOUR TALKING OF SOMETHING YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT,SO I WOULD JUST SIT BACK AND LISTEN,BE OPEN MINDED

Aye, sorry your right Flint08.

Lad, you listen to flnt and get the dog out there running stuff.

Pay no mind to the terrian or if the rabbits are easy or not, just keep running the pup and you will end up with a world beater.

Glad I came on now, they say you learn something new everyday.

i beleive in starting them early 7 months onwards, ok doubling up with experienced dog for a couple of runs but to much and when run single will always be looking for the other dog, but a whippet id hold back abit maybe 9 or 10 months only the person who knows the dog knows when there ready

i can vouch that flint08 has a world beater at the moment and it is only 16 months old ,and all the dogs he has owned have been dogs that you or any one would give their right arm for ,and there are a lot of people on here that will say the same ,so some thing he is doing is working . :  :and its not waiting untill they are past their best months for learning . even tho i dont see eye to eye with flint08. people shouldnt just blank what he says hes been working dogs for an incredable 50 years well actually longer but started them young for 50 so think hes very clued up on weather it works or not. and if i didnt work why didnt he go back to starting them late simply because he found starting them early works. people should want to tap into all those years of experiences good and bad that he can offer.

"YOU FXXKIN MAD a whippet can easily catch a rabbit at 5 months"

That says it all, what is it you are trying to prove by running a puppy on rabbits.

Up untill 10-12 months old all a running dog should be doing is training, socialising, getting used to its senses and growing up fit and healthy.

But i am sure you know all this, and judging by your attitude in your response you will give me a brief, poorly spelled lecture on how much of a wanker i am

Cheers FTB

your bang on mate 12 months is idea i ve started a few dogs older cos they were still childish never rush into it and if you already got a dog working whats the rush like sending a toddler to work you just dont do it let them grow first

How can you make a statement like that about a dog after its first season.

I just dont get it. It couldnt possibly have seen nearly enough game to even be considered as such.

I aint wanting an argument so i'll probably leave it at that :whistling:

Have to agree with FTB.No one is saying a running dog cant catch a rabbit at five, six or seven month

At that age the dog should still be in training. We can all let our dogs run up and down fields until they catch a few rabbits or any other quarry. But the day will come when an untrained dog will get you into trouble and you,ll deserve it.atb. Catcherthumbs.gif

Alright then smart arse, how many months has this 'pup' been running for and how much game has he accounted for to achieve this 'world beater status'.

No serious dog man i know would contemplate giving a dog a title like that at such a yoiung age

In fact, no good dogman i know would blow his trumpet like that.

Or can we expect to see this dog in the stud section in a couple of weeks.

Believe me mate, its me that should be laughing.

FTB
