crow shooting

either your puncuation is wrong, :hmm: or you want to shoot some crow nests :hmm:

I wouldent shoot birds on the nest, even as pest control, you then stand the chance of shot birds, falling onto nest and just rotting away, no very proffessional looking

Spend as much time as you can from now onwards making a note of nests and nests being built and repaired, its easier when there are no leaves on the trees. You can ambush birds nest building just like you can with sitting crows.

Get a friend to approach the nest with you, one of you hides while the other walks away. It can take upto 30mins for the crow to return. If your shooting nest builders leave the nest as another pair may start to use it later on. If the nest had a sitting bird on it give the nest one to destroy the eggs.

Without doubt the best time is once the new youngsters are 'branchers'

They will just hop about the trees trying to exercise their wing before leaving.

As someone mentioned its May time.

The young are quite stupid and there is also the chance of the adults as the try to feed them or come back to roost late evening.

Had some good bags and sport with the air rifle knocking em down.

I remember my dad shooting them and making rook pie out of the branchers breasts!

If you wait till young crows are out on the branches it defeats the object, they will have got to that age with bellies full of eggs and chicks!!!! You also lessen the chances of killing the parent birds which will simply nest again.

Also there is a differece between crow and rooks!

May i be a party pooper, i attended a talk late last year from a former essex police wildlife officer. under the wildlife / countryside act. is is against the law to shoot or destroy any nest that is in use. And i remember him stating that woodies nest all year round :wallbash: .

Im sure this must be somewhere in the net for all to read.

Best to use a 22-250 like a mate of mine does then eh :gunsmilie:

Rooks and crows are all a bloody pest!

How to tell the difference!

If you see a rook on its own its a crow.

If you see a lot of crows together they are rooks!

I also bow to you superior knowledge :whistling::clapper:

......Or you could simply learn to tell the actual difference between crows and rooks.

Kill crows at every chance you get and rooks when they are causing damage as sometimes they do a lot of good eating leather jackets etc.

can anyone tell me the best time to go shooting crows nests, better when they are sitting on eggs thanks in advance. atb.

im no expert on shooting but a pal has some land that has a rookery and for the last few year we tend to go around the 15th may for the branchers, but to be honest there were nearly a good week earlyer last year so try to keep an eye on them leaving the nest and make shore you have plenty of cartridges and have fun aswell as pest control at them, atb
