RicW 67
Hey Kla, got interested in this one, and been doing some research. Top method to control snails is, as said, introduce a pair of clown loaches. Also, if you put any plants, gravel or whatever in the tank, wash them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate first. You can buy it from your local chemist, BUT make sure you rinse it off before you introduce the plants to your tank. Many copper compounds will kill snails, but they are dangerous to your fish as well. It might be worth the effort to transfer your fish to a holding tank and flush your main tank with copper sulphate solution, but make very sure you rinse it all out before you put your fish back. I'm sorry if I peed you off with my earlier post, but I still like the idea of a great white shark in a home aquarium! Like, don't stick your finger in my fish tank! They are no more prone to it than any other fish if kept in the correct conditions...but yes if you keep them in low temp or poor conditions and they will be the first to pick it up,often newly transported fish will pick it up due to the stress of moving, white spot is easily treated these days anyway.Like anything else, just look for healthy specimens before buying and keep them in healthy conditions. droid 11
2 points 1) Clown Loaches are shoal fish. Buy 3 or more. 2) I've used King Btitish WS3 successfully on whitespot, but you have to treat twice, as it doesn't kill the cysts and you get reparasitism when they hatch. A week should do it
PeakOil 352
If you are waging war on snails, don't forget to check inside your filter(s). Last week I found about a hundred baby snails hiding inside the various layers of media in my external and internal filters. Check for snail eggs that have been sucked in there too.
