Fixing crack/split

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice please. I have a split in the wood on my air rifle going from the trigger backwards towards the butt about 3-4 inches long. It's long enough to make the butt move if it's not taped up tight. Does anyone know the best way I could fix this? The rifle is a Weihrauch HW80K.

Any help or advice would be appreciated very much.

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam,

I had similar split in the stock of an old ASI Rangemaster that I refurbished.

The previous owner had put some PVA glue in it, which would have been okay, if it was to be used as an ornament and not fired.

I used a resin similar to Araldite. It was hard work to get it in between the split, but it worked fine.

You will have to remove the action etc from the stock and be sure to remove any excess if you decide to go down this route.

Good luck

try and post some pics buddy. you could remove the action drill 2 holes going back towards the butt with a fairly large drill bit. then using a smaller bit make some pilot holes then use some self tapping screws to pull the stock back together. ive used this method to fix a webly stingray that had the stock split almost in two. worked a treat.

Cheers guys I shall take some pictures later and post them up. Was thinking a couple of screws and some araldite type glue. Put it in the vice to hold shut (not too tight) the split is wide enough to see through to the other side and slide glue in.

Hi Queequeg.

There is a glue called Mitre mate, has an activator spray.

The stuff is brilliant, and VERY strong, goes off in minutes.

Very easey to use, you just need to be able to get it in the gap, its fairly runny so should be ok.

Just another idea mate.

Good luck with it.

Have you shot the AA Hunters yet....were they any good for you ??

No not yet mate i'm planning on sighting the rifle in using them and giving them a shot this weekend.

I'll take a look into that glue. Should work a treat.

Cheers

ive used super glue on splits ,i cant fault it.

Polymers and plastics I can see it working on  , but not on a porus stock such as wood surely :hmm:

Having said that, superglue is water soluable, so if you were out in the rain or it got wet for some other reason such as dropping the gun in a torrent of water (Don't worry Niel buddy I won't mention any names ) the glue would rapidly fail
