New permission

Recommended Posts

I have just been given a chunk of new land, around 100 acre's of hay fields surrounded by woodland. Now it has plenty of Fallow and some Boar, now the question, what caliber and what else do I need to know? Like do I need to go on any special courses or do I need any tickets, paper work etc? Can I lamp boar?

7mm minimum for pigs and you need Boar specified on your license. No courses needed but pigs are feckin dangerous so get an experienced person to take you out if you can. Not sure about the lamping.

Are you asking the questions now? I don't have a centrefire.

For Native species on deer in England and Wales you need .243 legal minimum. Muntjac and CWD min .220 centre-fire 1000 ft.lbs ME. Recommended minimum for boar is .270, better .308, 150gr bullet, expanding NOT fragmenting. As said, you will need your ticket varied to allow boar and deer. If you have only used rimfire you will almost certainly not get deer until you have either spent time with a qualified mentor or gained your DSC.

TBH, I doubt you would get 100 acres passed for more than .22CF any way.

Bit of a downer, sorry!

edited to add, yes you can legally lamp boar. My opinion is that you should go out two handed and the lamp man should have a big CF ready for a back-up shot. A boar can hit 40mph so you can do without faffing about getting a second round chambered.

You did no say you have permission, I take for granted , this is so ? You say you have chunk of new land, for which purpose ? You must have letter from land own to shoot the animal, you say. If not, you only pest control.

If you have letter for shoot deer & boar, you need 243 for deer, is small calibre but will do fox & 6.5 calibre minimum, for boar velocity require.

I say go 243 6.5 & 308.(this suit all)Police say you may need experience hunter with you also, if you new to hunt , with such power rifle. 100 acre not much! bullet from this rifle go 5 kilometre & more in distance, so land may need police to see, before they say ok.

best wish to you.

not allways the case that 100 acres could be very hilly with good postions to shoot from. all depends on the lay out of the ground.

as for the deer yes best get with someone who has shot them before he can learn off.

not all forces make you do mentoring or dcs1 tho. here in west mercia they like you to do it but they dont say you have to.

Err . . . 100 acres of hay fields surrounded by woodlands? Doesn't sound very hilly to me.

Jamie, fair comment but going from HMR to .243? Surely likely to get a mentor condition whatever you're shooting at?
