well about 3 weeks ago my dog lost is nail on back toe while on lamp. did usual salt water kept dry kept my eye on it. it was a clean cut which he has had before so did not worry the last one grew back. this morning his toe had swelled up so i took him to vets and he said he might have to have toe off. i obviously said i wanted to try my best to get it right he gave a shot and some antibiotics and has gave me till monday to see how it goes.im am bathing in salt water every 2 hrs and putting tcp on aswell. has anyone else had this is there another solution. it looks asthough there is a nail still in their all advice would really be helpfull he is only just over 2 and has is making a really good dog. atb mike

If the toe has to come off mate its not that big of a deal... ive known and seen a fair few with the odd toe off still go out and do their job.. and do it well... atb stabba

FFS dont let the vet take its toe off unless its badley fractured the swelling should go down with the anti biotics my old lurcher bitch has 3 nails missing that never grew back and they never get infected.IMHO a lot of vets see an easey option by amputating and charging the earth .Is the vet a good running dog vet.? atb dell

My bitch had a broken toe about three years ago which also became infected.The vet said she might have to have it off.The vet gave her some antibiotics which did nothing.The vet gave her some stronger antibiotics the following week and the swelling went down a few days later.I didn`t let her run for about two months after and it healed fine.She`s never had a problem since.Make sure you don`t run the dog too soon and allow it to heal.Like lads have already said,dogs will run fine without the odd toe.Good luck.

had a racing dog with his toe off was never the same so try everything before making decision his nail would grow back but when free running him on playing field would lose his nail so had op done when tried running would come off lame

lad i know,his bull x had a front toe removed(front inside),lad said he never noticed the difference in the dogs running at all,not sure on a back foot,think i would take the advice and go all out for the dog to keep it

find a decent greyhound vet mate,you'll get better advice,taking the toe off should be the very last resort,seen it before with mates dog's,starts with one,this leaves it weak on that foot and before you know it the next toe goes,seen some good dogs retired with foot problems,unfortunately some of the heavier bull crosses suffer with foot problems,stay off hard ground,let it heal and good luck with it,yis,wirralman

my mates bitch had a toe off and it made no real problem,she was an excellent fox bitch .She carried on as per usual a few weeks later slaughtering foxes

well i have bathing in salt water every 2hrs even through the night i have got swelling down now by about just over half.i really dont want toe off. yes he is a well known vet all lads i know with running dogs go there. i have got someone try to get hold of a greyhound vet. fingers crosses. cheers for you advice

well the toe has come down a lot now. still hasnt completly gone all the way down. after bathing it in salt water i have been putting few drops of tcp on end of toe, someone said yesterday not to use it. does anyone else
