keeps the tasty stuff for himself

Recommended Posts

My 6 month old BedWhip x Pointer is excellent at fetching, but keeps hold of anything edible he comes across. If approached when he's got hold of some skanky old bit of pheasant, he'll growl and leg it. It's a pain getting him back on the lead when he does this, as you can imagine. More important, does this suggest there'll be probs getting rabbits, 'etc.' off him when he's old enough to hunt? If so, what can I do now to avoid this?

All thoughts gratefully read.

Nick

He obviously doesnt respect you or see you as pack leader mate. Back to heel work, be strict and every time he sniffs something while on the lead, jerk the lead to pull his nose off the ground and firmly say no. Also mean it when you give a command and dont walk away untill he does as hese told. For example "sit"..........."sit"............."sit".........."oh bollox". Thats not the way. Tell him "sit" and if he dont sit say it again firmly and push his arse down. Say "sit" again and hold him for a few seconds till hese settled. Every time he stands up push his arse back down and repeat the sit command. Also practise taking his food away while hese eating and giving it back when hese calm and submissive.

ive trained pointers for the gun and they are headstrong so the above advice is good,

re inforce this training with rabbit skin dummy in a controlled environment, but he needs to know you mean business and that doesnt mean a kicking, if you dont keep him under control he will be an absolute b*****d by the time he is a year old

try a trailing lead( it will make him feel more under controll and make him easier to get hold of :whistling: just by standing on it).

basic obiedience is the key here, repetition of basic commands(with reward) will become automatic responses.

consequence is that sit/down etc mean exactly that, you can call him to you and treat as a retrieve( no matter how skanky and horrible the item may be :icon_eek: ) get all excited and make a fuss of him for bringing it and take it off him in the usual manner( maybe just with the finger tips if its real nasty :icon_redface: ). reward him and all is good.

sounds easy but it can be hard work with dogs who have started being gits.

i would start on a long lead(laying out items for him to find, which can be replaced with something he really likes,cheese/fresh meat etc etc).

do not tolerate ANY agression at all towards people especially you.you are the gaffer
