sam007 34
Looking to purchase a new long net, what would be the best mesh size 4" or 2". Goldfinger I think you have got that wrong I have never heard of anybody with a 2ins mesh longnet 4ins yes but not 2ins unless somebody knows different I use a 2.25ins mesh board to tie thus I end up with a 4.5ins mesh I think the 2ins is a half mesh Cheers Gareth Quote Link to post

The one 8,463
You got a pm mate Quote Link to post
mally 832
I'd recommend a mesh size of 54mm mate, Make sure you buy a net with 100% bagging the ones you get from deben and the main retailers there just isn't enough bagging in them. I make my own longnets and i do have some netting in stock. Let me know via pm what size your looking for and i'll send you a price including end pins (traditional set) with 100% bagging guaranteed Quote Link to post

TC When i order my sheet netting it's measured knot to knot as i order 200metre x 54mm mesh sheets mate. You are correct it's 108mm but it's sold by the suppliers as 54mm mesh (knot to knot). I like this mesh size as the rabbits heads go through and there caught. They don't seem to bounce off like they sometimes do with the 50mm mesh. Quote Link to post
Leeview 791
Goldfinger:I notice Mally's on your doorstep get in touch with him and go round and see how to run a longnet out and how it works before you purchase one Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post

Mally what you have stated is correct I use 4.25" on all my hand made nets. At a guess you are getting your nets from a rabbit hardware supplier. Just a little tip. No commercial made nets are made for catching rabbits. All the nets that are used for rabbiting are for the fishing trade and are utalised by rabbiters. I have been makeing fishing nets for too many year now and no supplier, and I mean no supplier, would try and sell nets stating a half mesh as the size. BTW Knot to knot means when the diamond of the mesh is stretched, as in the diagram below a mesh is measured between 1 and 2 the side knots 3 & 4 do not count. ....*1 3*.......4* .....*2 The forum will not allow the spacings that I want for the diagram, but I am sure you can see what I mean. TC Please read my post TC i make all my own rabbit nets from 6z sheeting i buy from a wholesaler. I don't buy them ready made from a rabbit net supplier. I've made all my own nets for years and above all they work. I'm not going to get into an argument, but i know how i order my netting and it's as i said Goldfinger, as leeview says pop around and see me running out the nets. Quote Link to post
longnetter 32
Tiercel is dead right FISHING nets are measured over the longest point ie 1 - 2 but RABBIT nets are measured over the shortest point ie 1 - 3or4 . This is just one of those peculiarities that exist in net making . However, if you were to ask Advanced Netting for 54mm mesh he would know exactly what you mean and that you are a rabbiter and he would sell you a 54mm mesh net but in FISHING parlance the same net would be sold as 108mm mesh . So you're both right ATB Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
As you stated mally, not wanting to get into an agument. Please write all you know about long netting stick it on the back of a stamp and post it to me. Basically you are talking through your ar$e. The only time you offer anyone help in longnetting section is when you have something to sell. In fact looking back the only time you post is when you have something for sale. TC Quote Link to post

So you're both right ATB Sorry to correct you on a point here longnetter. As all commercial sheet nets are made for Fishing they are by your definition all measured from 1 to 2. Just because Steve @ advanced knows what you are talking about when you ask for a 15.5 MD 50mm net, does not mean that every one does. I think that the confusion comes about from making purse nets that are measured by rows not meshes. people then talk about x amount of rows with a 2" board and are counting those rows as meshes..
