hairyface 211
i was buying some redmills complete food today and i noticed the lad had some CHUDLEYS GREYHOUND CRUNCH that was 55% protein, is there anyone on here that feeds such a high protein feed, what would be the benifits to feeding this high protein,or would there be a down side, ive never heard of feed at 55% before, wouldve thought it wouldve given my dogs the shits
kill um with crisps 7
I dont know but i imagine pro greyhound racers would use it when racing everyday but in the world of working lurchers if anything i should think it could be handy as an addition to a dogs bowl of redmills during times of high activety, say if your working him harder than usual or after whelping/weaning pups to help regain condition. skycat 6,173
no matter which way you look at it its all shite Gotta agree: I'd have thought that you would be well placed to feed your dogs on what they catch: whole carcase, maybe not all at once, but a mixture of meat, offal, bone, fat and a bit of hide and hair for roughage is the best diet for most dogs: no worries there about what percentage protein and all that crap they go on about: the whole beast contains everything in the right amounts for dogs as well as wolves. Only thing I would say is that my dogs with a fair bit of Saluki in do better if they get some carbs, usually in the form of boiled brown rice: chuck in a few minced veggies as well and you have the best complete diet for a dog without having to worry about percentages of this and that. Cold Ethyl 63
I would never give my dog 55% protein its kidneys would end up screwed.Mine get skinners now and personally its more expensive yes i use the duck or fish and rice stuff but far better imo.I cant see past it the dogs thrive on it great coat and great condition all 3 of them.My male doesnt hold weight easy and hes been steady now on this for months even when he was ill when usually he drops weight likes hes scared of it.Built Kev the foster up on it and a friends dog not a lurcher but prone to allergies has been put on it as well. Her coats shiny as hell. sandymere 8,263
Lordy 55%. if you have working huskies then there might be some augument for that sort of level as pulling a sledge 8 hours a day will destroy a lot of tissue and red blood cells that only protein can replace but any other activity is unlikely to need so much. When protein is overfed the body reduces absorbtion to an extent so a little more than necs is ok but that more than a little. Protein is a poor energy source in comparrison to fat or carbs. In simple feeding is a bit like owning a car you need spare parts to replace dammaged which is proteins role, then you need fuel for pottering about like diesel, fat fills that role, and then you need fuel for high performance stuff petrol, glucose is the high speed muscle fuel, its also the one preferred by the brain and heart. If you feed that amount of protein plus lots of fat and carbs it won't be very well absorbed so a waste or if fed without alternative it will be used but inifficiently with lots of waste products. Regards sandymere.

Cold Ethyl 63
Ive read good and bad about barf and always wanted to do half dry food half barf but to get it delivered here at a reasonable price is proving difficult.Mine are on Skinners duck or salmon and rice only 22 % and theyre thriving they can do anything on it.They maintain a steady weight which my males never done so over the moon with it for that. The dogs look good on it shiny coats bright eyes wet nose etc etc.I also know that later on in life their kidneys wont blow up.Personally i think 55% is far too much and i can bet any dietician or vet would say the same.As for barf dont know how many barf fed dogs ive seen in the vet with compacted bowels and bones lodged where they shouldnt be dogs with toxo etc maybe the feeders wrong doing but still a risk.I dont cook for mine any meat they get is raw cos they really enjoy it like that so who am i to argue but a lot of folks use barf as a trend a new thing to try with your dog.
