slingshot 0
One rifle will cover your requirements if you are prepare to reload your own, and that the .22 hornet, it can be downloaded to produce a subsonic round or bemade to push a bullet around the 3000fps. It moderates very well and is a easy round to shoot .22 wmr is another option if you did not want to reload but is not very common and ammo maybe difficult to comeby. I am filling in my FAC this week end and am unsure what to put down for approval. I am looking to shoot Rabbit and Fox but dont know if i should punt for one rifle to cover both app's or split it up and have tools for the job at hand!!!!!! money is an issue but i am in no rush to run out and get both as soon as the grant has been approved. i can wait and get one then the other!! at the mo i was going to put down for .17hmr and .223 Whats your view? I'd go for that, I've had my FAC since late last year and went for .22LR and FAC Air and now have both and love them both but I already know in the next year or so I'll be forking out for a variation to add a .223 Just bear in mind you need to demonstrate a need for whatever you apply for... so no point applying for .243 if you have no land to support it etc. Quote Link to post

CUPCAKE118 0
you dont have to put the round type if i am reading the form right just the Cal so if i put .22 it would cover .22lr or hornet right?? Quote Link to post

No, Hornet is a centrefire, LR is rimfire. I've heard of people who had .22RF on their cert but still couldn't buy a WMR, just LR. You're correct in that the form isn't that specific but the FEO would tie you down to a specific rifle in the end. Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
This seems to be getting a bit involved, lets go back to basics.. If you have a requirement or potential requirement which you feel you can justify, then apply for .22lr .17HMR Hornet .223 .243 Discuss and debate by all means but it costs you nothing more to apply for the lot. Also gives you a chance to chat with your FEO and seek his advice...always makes him feel important!! Quote Link to post

wickedwickedmotox 0
Hi i have just got my fac for .22lr and.243. Basically they are looking for a good reason for shooting with type of rifle, you will not get a .243 for foxing it wont happen they will recommend 22-250 the most commonly used fox buster,as with 22lr you will be lucky to get that let alone 17hmr, they prob advise .22 rf. You really need to look into these guns understand the ballistics etc,as to land use you could only have 1 acre so long as you have a suitable backstop they really have no grounds to refuse.I suggest you join basc or other fieldsports group show you are serious they are very helpfull. When i applied for my fac the feo said over the phone i wouldnt get .243 after meeting and walk round land check i got passed but i am a farmers son and it is my fathers land. Just talk to the feo let them know the reasons for calibres etc at the end of the day you dont want to be spunking a grand on a 223 then a year later a roebuck pops up and you gotta get a .243 buy once explain this to feo reasearch your rifle and quarry know your land and demonstrate knowledge, you dont want to be knocking a fox over with a 1oo grainer and to let it keep on trucking over the horizon.(yes it is the only weight i use for fox fallow and roe saves messing with scopes! and yes it turns fox inside out!) CUPCAKE118 0
i think its got to long this topic new people are jumping in and posting there ideas on .243's that wasn't the idea or the original post. In basic the topic has worked!! we have worked out that .17hmr although a nice bit of kit it is costly to run and becomes a bit of a handful if the wind picks up due to the weight of the round. The .22lr is a good starter rifle that no ticket should be without the .22 hornet is a fox cal. that can be used on smaller ground game with the right skill and shot awarenes and can be very cheap to run when loading you own. .223 is a good fox rifle that is passed for Muntjac and i think chinese water dear (muntjac being the only dear that can be found at the mo on or near my permission) there was no talk of .243 on the original post it was just chucked in post's as a bang it in the application and see what happens!!
