What Cal or what combo?

Recommended Posts

I am filling in my FAC this week end and am unsure what to put down for approval.

I am looking to shoot Rabbit and Fox but dont know if i should punt for one rifle to cover both app's or split it up and have tools for the job at hand!!!!!!

money is an issue but i am in no rush to run out and get both as soon as the grant has been approved. i can wait and get one then the other!!

at the mo i was going to put down for .17hmr and .223

Whats your view?

I'd never be without a .22lr, HMR is ok for bunnies but has a loooong way to go to catch up with .22lr in terms of stuff killed! Ammo is ridiculously dear too, I reload hornet for what my mate pays for HMR ammo.

For me, .22lr for bunnies and reload .22 hornet for fox. Don't be put off by reloading, it's easy and will save you a fortune. Hornet will do everything HMR will for the same money, cheaper rifles, and is a genuine fox calibre.

wouldnt bother with HMR put downn .22 rimfire insted you'll get much more use from it,223 as good as it gets, although if you get chance of deer why not put .243 :victory:

was looking into Dear in the next couple of seasons but for the mo i just want to get my foot in the door of FAC and use for what i have at the mo!!!

so we are going for the scrapping of the .17hmr idea and going for a .22lr for bunnies RIGHT

What about the fox: .22 hornet or .223 ??????????????????????????

think i would go for .223 cheaper factory ammo with more choice, only go for hornet if your gona do home loads, thats just my opinion

As said already, the .22 rimmy is the rabbitting workhorse and should be a standard on any FAC application. Don't rule out the .17HMR, it has its uses so I would recommend asking for both from the outset. If you think you can get .223 on you first application (no reason why not) then don't bother with Hornet (my opinion lads don't get upset).

Really it's about what you need not what you want/can get. There is a tool for every occasion so work out what you want your rifles to do for you and then look at what fits the bill. Range, noise, cost, reload, expeience etc, all thing to take into account.

when i apply 2/3 year ago, i put for 22r/f 22H 223 243 6.5 7-08 308 303 338 357 & 44 also shotgun x 2 .

I get all but 7-08 he say all i have will do , all 1 price . why ask 3 maybe 4 time for what you need , ask 1 time. get all.

17 too light. get 204/22H better.

I'd go .22LR and .223 - LR will get you more bunnies than you and a boat load of ferrets could munch and a .223 will do foxes and give you a crack at some deer too. The LR isn't an all-rounder, it's a dedicated bunny basher but very good at it. .223 is probably the best all rounder in the .22CF's if you consider ammo availability, noise, ease of shooting etc, I think it just edges .22-250 but it's very subjective.

.243 is even better if you know your land will pass.

i would get a 22lr and 223 and 243. but ! use the 223 for abit till you get use to centreifre then if you do have roe and bigger deer on there sell the 223 and the money from that will get the 243.

you wont have to pay to add a slot if you get 243 on ticket now. and it will save you having to many rifles in future as the 243 will do it all.

i'd deffo go for the .22lr for the bunnies and the general vermin, mag's crows etc... cheap shooting and you still learn the skills needed for c/f

a days plinking with the hmr does get a little expensive... :(

i'd go for .223 also as a foxing tool, and ask your FO, does he think in his opinion would you get granted for a .243 on first application, all he can do is say no....

All the best...

Snap.

fair enough i think i like your plan!! i will give him a call see what he says.

If i was to put down .243 and it not be granted would the whole application be turned down or just that Cal.

at the mo on my permission the only dear that can be found is muntjac but have a friend that has offered some big game when i get sorted. I am looking to go on the Dear society course's this year and next.

When you application goes in you will have an interview with the FEO, this is where you discuss what you have applied for and articulate your reasons for the various calibres. If the FEO doesn't think you should have .243 just yet he will amend your paperwork and you will just get the agreed calibres. The whole application will not be turned down if one cal is denied.

Don't disregard muntjac, you can take it with a .223, it easyish to get back to the car and still good eating .

When the FEO comes to visit, that's largely where your choices are granted or not, if you can show due regard for the power of a .243 - understand it's range/trajectory etc and you have land that would support it, there's no real reason you wouldn't get it.

...but no, it not being granted would not prejudice your entire application.
