If it does decide to chase a rat and grabs one, gets itself bit hard and decides is doesnt like it and lets go, theres a good chance the rat wont let go, with the dog sqealing theres a good chance another terrier will run in ripping it from your pups face. One F---ed terrier pup. Attack Fell Terrier 864
I dont start them on rats until they've got all their proper teath through. I wouldn't be sending a 4 month old terrier into do the job, its too young IMO at the moment. It's up to you but I'd wait another 2 or 3 months before introducing the pup to rats. Quote Link to post
paulk73 151
im with charlie hunter on this, ive seen and had terriers work rat at early age, terriers can and will kill from an early age its in there make up just make sure its fully jabbed up and take a 1st aid kit with you, also dont let the dog take to many nips as this will sicken a young un Not sure how you make sure were and how deep your pup gets bitten ,If you have a child at 9 or 10 and give him a belt round the head there's every chance he start crying or sulk of,do the same to a 20yr old and he will give you a belt back if he as some fight in him ,its called maturing .You can have a 5 stone lad who looks like a piece of string who is bullied at school become a champion of the world when he its maturate LET YOUR DOGS BE PUPS BEFORE THEY BECOME A GLADIATOR sounds like sense. paulk73 151
there is every chance that entering prematurely could ruin your pup. so if your of a mind to do so go for it. but bare in mind waiting and entering your terrier properly will give it every chance to become a good terrier. the quicker they start the better they become is nonesense. some of the very best workers mature slowly. so i'd say keep the little bugger under your arm and only let it go if your content to waste it well i no its true or i wouldnt say it would i??? im not talking about your average dog here im talking about getting the best of the best to run on out of a litter ive seen loads of terriers do this and become excellent workers how many times do i have to say it! proper terriers are born to it and its there from an early age if your clever enough to see it. i once had a fox in a trap and was passing the pig shed where my dogs were so i called in to check on them. anyway i was cleaning the pups that were now 10 weeks old and i accidently stood on a dog pups toe and the poor little fella was going mad so i picked him up and took him to the pick up to check him proper. he started sniffing the air and went towards the cage so i took off the blanket covering it and the pup started baying at the fox! he was really going for it but i dont think he knew what doing just instinct told him thats what he was meant to do. they mature alot quicker than most realise do terriers a hell of alot more faster than lurchers. cant understand why you didnt throw the terrier pup in with the fox if it was baying, i mean if it was really going for it, must have have been ready. cos i dont know if you know this but terriers mature very quickly. a lot quicker than say, a lurcher for instance. and racist aswell, as for having a game of spot the wh@te man, i think theres a few people having a game of spot the bell end on here. any one spotted one yet? lol we got a big man here then have we??? fox is completely different to a rat you little dickhead so shut your f*****g mouth. i never replyed to your post as i thought you was ok and was listening to what i had to say but obviously you no it all thats why you have ended up with a plummer!! and im not racist but take a wander through handsworth one day and you will see what i mean. and i am not wrong terriers mature alot quicker than lurchers come back when your balls have dropped and you might no what i mean charlie hunter i think we should agree to disagree on this one. everyone has thier own ideas and methods of bringing a pup on, and if this works for you, youve got it right. its not for me. atb in the future Quote Link to post

Toka 10
i agree with the slower approach but each to their own...i was always told that before their adult teeth were through one of the diseases that rats carry could do some damage to the pup...not sure how true this is but didnt want to risk it!!
