my missus used to work for british holidays mate, got the best caravans money could buy for free-be weekends and the odd week away, although very nice and some luxurious, would never want to live in one, after a week you need space and lots of it,even had central heating in some of them but f**k spending a winter in one, hair dryer gave out more heat and water pressure!!!!!!!!!!!!might as well of stood under a leaking tap,

Spent 9 months in a big touring caravan after i was flooded out of my house.Top notch caravan shower, heating everything you need. There was me wor lass the dog and bloody parrot in there. I think there suitable for short periods of time but nothing long term.

My head was done in after a few months was ok in the summer months but once the cold nights kicked in freezing the pipes well that just put me off them for life . Still got mine putting her up for sale as the caravaners and campers will be starting there season soon .

Stick with the house there much better.

dont get the fixed beds because they are wasted space in the day, id avoid buying hobbys, although they look nice and they are cheap they arent the best quality id go for a tabbot, eldis, LMC or something like that. if your buying secondhand be sure to have a good look at chassey and see if the gas and water works with no leaking. if your not going to be doing alot of travelling be sure to get a good awning with an anix. if you put boards down under carpet put batton between the boards and the ground also invest in a skirting cover to stop the draft coming in the awning ;)

We live in twin axel big caravan for 9 month , before i renovate home. From july 08to may 09. Sunshine days are good, winter rain & wind, no so good. I live in caravan ,it freeze solid for 10 days , last winter. bed sheet also freeze to wall. Not good. :icon_redface:

If you must do, insulate floor, block up all vent. make sure good electric heater & power there.

English winter here was -10/15*c & rain side way. :o

Only do it as a last resort. If you're looking to save money, maybe look to finding a cheaper house to rent? Winter is miserable. Frost gets into everything, and don't forget there will most likely be no frost proof storage for your possessions outside the caravan. Touring caravans are made for using a few weeks in the year. They will fall apart if you live in one full time, decreasing the resale value of the caravan a lot. Condensation would also be a big problem with a family of three in a touring caravan. It's best to do as much cooking as possible outside, which is no fun when the weather's bad.

I hate it and dream of the day when I am able to live in a house. Don't do it unless you really have to.

Have to disagree on this post sorry

Hobbys are top notch, would have one myself but can't affordd them!

Most other caravans share the same fittings and fixtures and there are only a few left that aren't owned by the same company.

Quality these days is not what they used to be so choose carefully and invest in stocks of duct tape and super glue.

I've got a 3 berth twin axle Bessacar with all mod cons. Bought second hand at two years old. Buying new and you'll lose loads on depreciation.

I spent three weeks in Drymen (nr Loch lomond) over christmas a few years back.

It was warm dry and very cozy. Heating came on an hour before I got back from work. Very nice.

Couldn't put the awning up though as it was too windy although I would recommend it otherwise as it keeps dirty boots out.

Loved it. Do it again any time!

Good luck

Do your self a favour and get a static with a couple of bedrooms and a shower, if your on Calor gas you can run central heating from it, we had a shed outside for washing machine and tumble dryer, and dont forget a small patio :drink: very cheap to live in

About 10 yrs ago I bought a caravan off a mate for £400. It was a 5 berth sprite muskateer. Very old with an awning, shower and toilet etc.

I only bought it so that I could take the missus to Glastonbury and not put her through the hell that is the on site toilets. The plan was; drive down with it spend acouple of days on a farm nr Stone Henge see the solstice move on down to Glasto do the gig then leave the caravan behind and go home. Unfortunately we had somuch fun with it we ended up bringing it home and keeping it for two years. Gave it away to a mate who had just split up with his missus and wanted to go travelling. Apparently someone nicked it while he was down the pub. Turfed all his kit out including the telly and cleared off with it. We have since had two more caravans and done Glasto in them both. Wouldn't be without one now. Great fun and cheap!

Dog loves it too. Travelled most of England and wales in one and are intending to do Scotland this summer.

You can pick up some really cheap ones if you look hard enough. But £5K will get you a really nice 4 berth with all the bits n bobs.

Good luck and enjoy.
