12 hour mooch

Recommended Posts

hi lads

well are we sitting cumfee then ill begin..it was coming up to the normal mooching time (23.30) on saturday night

all the gear was ready wife had been baking so plenty of home made pies and 2 flask's you need your food and drink for the 12 hours planned i got on the ground for just after 00.00 and it was cold !! as i pulled onto the 1st field the head lights caught 3 bunnies sitting out munching strange i thought theres normally more than that out

by the time i got my gear on and the gun sorted and a quick zero check they had gone (they'll be back out later )

any how 1st lamp there was 6 sitting outside a set on the hill probably about 80 mtrs away so not to give them much notice i skirted along the bank side and used the natural gullies as cover by doing this i could move much faster (well faster than davy's crawl sry mate )

as i approached i kept to the side of the hill cos every good sniper knows you never break the silloet (not that im a good sniper ) but the same rules apply anyhow i got into position and all 6 were still out and i was at 40mtrs (lased) with my new hawk 600 so 1 mill dot hold over and down goes the 1st bunny 3 of the others headed for the holes which left 2 so i waited a bit to let them settle as they did cross hairs onto the 2nd 2 in the bag well they will be in a minute the 3rd headed for the hole but just as i was about to move it stuck its head up hmm hes gonna come back out so i hung around 20 mins later out he pops and down he goes

what a good night this was turning out to be 3 in the bag and not even into my 2nd hour ...

i picked up the bunnies and as i was only up from where the van was i headed back to put these 3 in the back which turned out to be a good idea in the end ...

i then headed over to the same place where i got the 1st 3 from and could not believe it one of them was back out as id already take 3 from that set i thought nah ill leave him (but then i got to thinking about davy and jasper) if they have a good night ill need all the points i can get) not that i like a bit competition so the same again i used the gully to get to the same spot i didnt even have to wait for him to settle i knew the distance ..... TWACK and he's down the 510 loves bisley mags 4 in the bag i waited to see if any more were coming out to play but i guess they were enjoying all the extra room

over the next couple of hours i managed to bag another 2 so that was 6 and by 04:00 i was getting colder in fact it was colder than a cold thing on a cold day ..so i headed to the van for a cuppa and a bit of wor lasses pie that sounds bad ... did i say it was cold whilst having my cuppa the windows were steaming up and it turning into a thin layer of ice did i say it was cold

as i was planing on moving to another field on went the engine and the HEATERS i sat for an hour it was like the big thaw

onto the next field and what a cracking sight the sun had started to rise this permission is very close to the sea the sea itself was like a mill pond and when the sun came up over the horizon ...well this is why i love to be out doors you get to see thing most people dont .. anyhow onwards and up wards and nothing for the next 2 hours

untill around 08:00 when i noticed a tractor coming my way when this happens you star to think shit am i still on my ground is somthing wrong ... as the tractor got closer i made my gun safe and went to see what was up id never met this guy before BUT he had been talking to the farmer who owned the land where i was shooting (i always ring him the night before) just to let him know im out are you gary fook me your crystal balls are good i thought ive got a 30 acre field with a problem mick has been telling me about you (micks the farmer who owns then land i shoot on ) would you like to shoot on this field hmmmmm let me think oh go on then ... it would be rude not to .. i asked him if he had time to show me the field so i jumped into the my van and off we went this field looked huge we swapped numbers and off he went well chuffed i was its good when farmers come looking for you .

as the sun warmed up the place i grabbed my gear and wandered off for a mooch on my new permission and the farmer wasnt wrong there was set's all over the place one i noticed must be about 50 holes with shit loads of fresh digs and dropping so out cam the range finder i got to 30mtrs but as this field had no cover it was a case of lye low and hope . after about an hour of lying in the sun out popped a bunny followed by 4 more i waited out came another 3 and i just lay there and waited and watched and waited a squeezed i dont think anyone had been on this field for ages the rabbits didnt know what hit them i did BISELY !!! i managed another 3 but shit theres plenty of work on here i cant wait .....so all in all 9 in the bag i wanted 12 so then i could say i averaged 1 an hour but i was knackered by then time for home and some more of wor lasses pie but thats another story

Hiya Gary.

What a cracking post mate, enjoyed the read very much.

Brilliant nights shooting, and what a bonus getting the other permission.

I reckon that Farmer will be inviting you to look after even more ground eventualy.

After a 12 hour stint, I think anyone would have been knackered.

I bet you slept like a sleeping thing in a state of slumbering.

Excellent post, shooting and bag buddy :notworthy:

Fantastic post and look at the size of some of those bunnys. Massive!!!! You are in for a treat on that new permission from the sounds of it, you can get massive bags if the bunnies just arnt used to anyone shooting them. Sitting ducks!

And I note you have a hawk 600 too! Ive just bought one this last week and am very impressed with it. Quick, accurate and takes the guess work out of every shot. Well worth my the investment.
