I have personally seen dogs take double figures weekly.. single handed.. week in week out... are they well known.. probably to a close circle of friends... braggin off about what youve got in your ken

foxes years ago were every where just like rabbits ,and they was only frightend of the sound of a hunting horn ,they never associated a lamp with danger like they do today ,they would even take rabbit

The awesome first cross PUNCH a real fox dog

This old girl accounted for over 300 foxes in her career day and night...retired now! dont know about being a legend but she was a good fox dog. She never yelped when she got bit she just got on with the job. Keano's Gripper and Big Max were also hard dogs on charlie.

Good to see one of the good and the great.300 in any dogs career should be commendednotworthy.gifnotworthy.gif

you here and read about old hare dogs all the time, surely there must be some well known exceptional fox dogs of old? what were they? how were they bred? how well did they do the job?? just thought id start this for the crack really, no specific reasons, just bored at 3 am, atb samstorm!

This was the opening post, so from what I've seen replied these dogs were around about the time of the ban? I was looking forward to some older posts of dogs from way back that were doing foxes, coursing dogs Hoover,Laddie, of course Eve and Merlin all get mentioned regularly on this subject, but when did foxes become "the in thing" because I cant recall many lurchers taking them going back to the 60's you had either a rabbiting dog or a hare courser

yes i have seen the dog run and run againts alot of dogs from all over the country for big money and this dog came out on top 90% of the time. 4 figures is maybe a bit over bourd from me but the numbers were getting up near there and alot of you wont believe me. I have seen this dog catch a fox 2 fields away on the lamp and also in the roughest fields i have seen :boxing:

stop talking shit,

stop talking shit,

i have an old retired lurcher who broke his leg at nine month old, the vet said he was finished but the old boy proved him and me wrong, it was as if he came back with a point to prove and the biggest majority he proved his point was on foxes,i had some excellent nights with this dog i just loved the way he took charlie out regardless how he got a hold of it,i got at least 6 full seasons out the old dog before the injury started taking it's toll on him, he might not have been a legend to some but there's a few lads on here who seen him in his day and were impressed for a dog to take such a bad knock to come back the way he did, i'd have to see undisputed diary to see how many foxes he put away but i know it will be into a 3 figure sum that the reason a breed form him thumbs.gif

foxes years ago were every where just like rabbits ,and they was only frightend of the sound of a hunting horn ,they never associated a lamp with danger like they do today ,they would even take rabbits in the lamp beam them selves when a dog was chasing the rabbits ,catching foxes back then was childes play ,i should know i done it and found it easy ,up to 25 in a week very regular and that was when i was out after rabbits not foxes .so as you see it was nothing special ,to prove it ,no one is geting the numbers to day are they .

during the recession of the early eighties we hunted foxes to sell for their pelts to a guy called cobbledick who was a fur trader,we recieved between 5pounds and 35pounds per skin,so we alway's kept good fox dogs,we quickly became very proficient at catching foxes without doing too much damage to the coat, our lurcher's were mainly collie/greyhound,deerhound/greyhound,saluki/greyhound crosses and all took to it easily, after a few bites they soon learned how to hold them so as not to get bit, once they master the choke hold it is no contest for the dog, some dogs bowl them over and pin, them other's pick them up and shake them.I don't think you will find a legendary fox dog due to the personalised nature of hunting them, its not like coursing were thousands of people spectated at an organised event,so reputations were soon grown quickly due to very nature of the sport and films were taken that enhanced their reputations further.you will find most lads had favourite fox dogs but none really of national renown,we had a special dog that stood 27tts,a saluki/greyhound that would go through anything to get a fox, easily the best we ever owned, had a good reputation locally but only to our circle of friends, wirralman

The dog wasnt called willow was he?

the bits i was refering to when i said STOP TALKING SHIT was,

1)the numbers, it was run hard but them numbers are just stupid, do the maths,

due to certain circumstances the dog done nowt for 18mths

2)the bit where you said YOU had been out with him all over the country

3)he didnt bet against other dogs for big money at all
