deer skin (lice)

i just got a sika skin and there's a lot of lice on it, will they die when i scrape the fat and meat off it or will i have to get flea pouder to get rid of them?

I've never seen lice or fleas on any deer in my neck of the woods - they are either keds or ticks. Try and kill a ked by pressing it between finger and thumb - if it does not die then it is a ked.

if they are on your skin then speak to a doctor mate.....i know 2 people that have nearly died of lymes disease if they are ticks! if you start to feel ill visit a doctor IMMEDIATLY! check out the link below!

soak the skin in alchohol for a few days(2 weeks if you have the time) this will kill all of the beasties and get the fat looser to scrape off. if you can get some aulan it will stop any beetle larvae from eating the skin when dried.

by soaking the skin will the alcohol have an affect on the hair?

it will release the oil but cause no damage(my mate is a taxidermist in germany and does this to all of the skins he fleshes himself).

i have done it with raccoon,fox,badger and pigs all were fine.

they are preserved(hard skins).

jusrt realised i hadn't read the threaed properly!

 

 

just contact a local tannery mate....i have one that will do deer skins for £25 they are worht more than double that when finished, and the are like velvet!
