hi just found out today vets use different types of vaccine and work in 2 different ways one is called a killer vaccine and this is the one that is become common in vets now as it breaks down in under 3 years and to keep up full protection you have to give an annual booster but if you ask the vet to give a live vaccine which is the other type this last longer and gives full protection like the good old days for almost life and is the same price as the killer vaccine. can you buy it your self to self vaccinate pups or is a lie when pup breeders say they've done it them selves. mainly put this post up as i never understood the need for boosters as since the parvo vaccine came out its only been recent for the booster to be introduced and now i see why. my vet told me mine is vaccinated with the live one so no need for booster. but to people who think oh my dogs never used to have a booster and they were fine well this is because your dog was vaccinated with the live vaccine and not the new used one today called the killer vaccine hope this helps any body who was confused like me. but remember even with any vaccine it only decrese the strenght of a virus for the body to help fight it so in rare cases dogs still contract the deadly virus atb all

all my dogs must have been done wi the live one mate as av never had to get them boosters....av only got one dog now an hes startin to age a bit so a know what you mean about the killer one...but if a bought a pup an the breeder said it was already done ,unless a knew them personally a would just be on the safe side an take the dog to a vet....cheers..chris..

yeah i agree about if you dont know them then get them to the vet so its done but just wondered if its easy obtainable as loads of people claim of self vaccination. just wondered if it really was as common as said and hope the topic helps people decide on wether there dogs need a booster or not and wether there still be protected if they decide not to. i always pre warn my vet to get the live vaccine in now as then i now its protected for life rather than only 12 months of 100% cover which decrease to 0% in 3 years which the killer one only protects for.

If you are going to insure your dog/s and/or board them when on holiday then you need to get them jabbed at vets so you can prove that they have been properly vaccinated.

our vets prefer to give pups there first jabs so they can have a check up but after that we do ours our self the boosters we fetch them from the vet i dont know if they are live jabs but i always get them there boosters because i have got a dog that court parvo and he was fully jabed up . 7 days on a drip the vet said it was a good job he was a fat puppy because thats what saved him atb turbo tyke

yeah parvo can still be caught if the virus is strong enogh. But what i mean is if you use the live vaccine the booster are pointless as the immunity is already there so it wouldnt help or change things by boostering them but if its the killer vaccine its different you do have to booster them every 12 months to keep the protection up. Its because they work i two different ways, the live one infects the dog witha very small amount of the virus and the dogs immune system learns to put and armoury against it and learns how to fight it and put a barrier up against the virus. once this is acheived it doesnt have to be done again as the dogs body has a immunity to the virus but the killer vaccine works different it stays in the dogs system only for 3 years then its gone and your back to square one without an immune dog hence the need for boosters to keep the drug in the dogs body for if they trun into the virus where as the live one trains the bodys immun system to fight it to stop the host being infected. Apparantly there is a big thing on it internally in vets saying the they should go back to the live as its the better vaccine but most vets who are in it for the money use the killer vaccine and dont approve
