semi auto or o/u 12 bore

Recommended Posts

Hi All. First post so go easy.

I have been thinking of an auto myself.

Made a choice of a Browning Maxus, as I have a Browning o/u Cynergy already & like em.

Any Opinions appreciated

personally I'd go down the European route, beretta and Benelli, though the reviews of american shotguns are pretty good and remington has a reputation of producing indestructible guns especially the 870 pump and the model 700,buuut I'm baised towards european shotguns. personally I have not seen anyone with any american shotgun besides the rem 870 and Winchester SX3 flanigan, but for auto shotguns, i like inertia operated, and that pretty much means benelli, their guns don't have the same flowing contours of beretta, but their lack of bits to clean and ease of maintenance won me over, unless you're going to be shooting 3 inch loads all day long then the benefit of a gas operated gun IMO isn't that great, or if you're shooting 200-300+ shots a day- if you can afford £1300 for a gun, then europe has what you are looking for!

hi all,

do most people use a semi auto for pigeon shooting or could they be used as an all rounder?

where as the over/under seems to be most peoples choice as an all rounder!

would any one use a semi auto as an all rounder?

thanks tl.

I have to say I am not a great fan of autos or pump shot guns

great in a pigeon hide or back of a pick up truck lamping, great fun. So why do I have a slight downer on autos? They are often purchased by novice shots often for the reason of lack of recoil (good reason) but a gun that cant be broken in the hands of a novice can prove a little disconcerting and tends to raise a few eyebrows unless gun handling is impeccable. A traditional break action s/s or o/u at a glimpse any one can see is safe, but the auto is not so easy especially if you are on the left hand side of the shooter. All that said in competent hands great tool for certain jobs.

Rember a auto with a 28 " barrel because of the reciever length handles like a 32" gun and a 30" auto like a 34" gun. This is often why many people shot autos well as their overall length makes them very pointable and they swing well. For me as I am a very deliberate shot with quite a slow and predictable style, I favor longer barrels both my competition and game guns are 32" barrels. I am not saying I am right just that what suits my style.

Hope this has been of help all the best Sage.

PSMy advice would be by a good second hand o/u

Whenever I have shot an auto at a clay ground, I hold it barrel up with the ejection port facing outwards, they are really no safer than an O/U it is all down to the shooter, in unsafe hannds, an O/U would be just as bad, muzzle swiping people for example, seen that all too often, one old chap blew a divot out of the grass 'cause he touched off the spare barrel only having fired the one shot- could have had a very different ending...
