missed my first cub of the season!

went for a walk with the 12g today to wind the week down, i took a couple of 36G BB cartridges with me "just in case" although i never see foxs when i go rough shooting. i had a crack at a couple of very high pigeons but missed! and this seemed to set the trend for the day!

 

i was stood at the hedge row waiting for something to fly over when i looked to the right of and there was a fox cub at about 75ish yards sniffing at the hedge! i slowly and quitely changed the cart's i had in the gun and gave him a squeek, the little blighter came running in so fast, as i raised the gun he saw me and turned on a 5pence i let both barrels go and missed with both shots.clean over the top of his head! hahaha

 

i very rarely shoot with my 12G and i have a habit of "pointing it" and not "swinging it through" apparantly....well thats my story and im sticking to it!

 

fortunately this ground is sledom shot over and isnt a farm, so i will have to have a crack with the lamp in the near future.

 

but just so you know....THE CUBS ARE OUT! if you can hit them that is!

You are shooting at cubs inside a vixen i take it???

 

There will be NO cubs above ground in march, they havn't been born yet nevermind running around weaned

 

It was probably last years cub and still not been shot at till you missed it

 

This is how a cub looks at about 6 weeks old and above ground by it's den, if it looked like the pic then it was a cub if not it was an adult fox

They may be born but certainly not above ground and coming to a squeak We shot a vixen the other night and the cubs INSIDE her were only about 3 inches long and no where near being born !!!!

we had a dig about 3 weeks ago and the cubs where a week or more well developed and by the looks eyes were not far from opening so there is cubs about. and on the other hand out lamping couple of weeks ago and there was 2 tied in feild so they will be some late cubs if you work that out. atb willum

i shot my first cub LAST YEAR on may 9th it was about 10-12 weeks old so it could have been born end jan/feb as for this year i have knowledge of 2 digs [not me by the way]by a well known terrier man where they have had cubs seems to me that its getting slightly earlier every year is this due to mild winters?although this one is a bit cold.

i have seen them tied in nov and dec of last year a mate of mine shot a pair at the end of dec and they were tied so their cubs would have been at least a couple of months at least

My old man has never seen a cub before March the 12th and hes been working terriers to fox for 40 years.

there are cubs in sets in certain parts of the country thats a fact,i agree, there are also alot of heavy vixens about. But! no cubs old enough to be bumbling around hedgerows on their own.

I do wonder whether we should have a self enforced closed season on foxes from february to april unless they are taking lambs. This would ensure that we didnt orphan cubs still under ground

look at the side of motor ways thats when you know when there are cubs about they get run over. but i have not seen nothing yet. will do in march tho

ive stopped lamping charley at night with the rifle's have done for the last month or so gota give things a chance in life mate.and only dig on keepers request at moment. cant see the point in going out shooting and digging everything on land that comes your way well thats my look on things each to there own though yis willum.
