I went on a mink hunt with the Yetne, mate. One of the best days out of my f*cking life! Brilliant craic! Ye get to act like a kid / hooligan and no one minds! :D

Running about river banks. Wading into rivers with all ye clothes on. Getting rather excited when the Hounds hit a scent and, eventually, with a bit of luck; Having the bugger holed up and the spades coming out. Terrier sorted that one out and it was wild eyes and wide grins all round.

All I can say is; If ye get the chance of a day out? Drop everything and stop at nothing to get there! I wound up trapsing miles and miles home, slopping wet, trying to thumb lifts, figuring I'd get mown down on some dark country bend at any minute. Never dampened my spirits though. The buzz stays with me to this day, years later. It's The B*llocks! :good:

thats something i never understood about the hunting act (not that any of it makes sense), why ban mink hunting when they cuase so much damage and can be killed as quikly as a rat or rabbit.

yes isnt it funny, that the introduced murderer, the mink, is protected from hound packs....and yet you can trap it and shoot it..lol....obviously this is not about animal welfare, but another less quarry on the "banned" list for dogs to stop hounds hunting. Of course, i feel our opponents underestimated peoples love of their sport. :clapper: Tally-Ho!! :):rocker: JD

That about hits the nail on the head :clapper: In the 90's I had a few good saturdays following the Dove Valley Minkhounds, some memorable hunts and a good laugh, Greg Mousley knew his hounds, his area and his quarry :thumbs-up:

Agree with DS, the best days organised hunting you can go on. The buzz is incredible, 7hrs walking, wading through rivers passes very quickly. And its hunting you can actively participate in yourself, your in the middle of it from start to finish. Before it was banned the last mink we hunted, Millet had to climb the tree to shake it out and one of my terriers caught it, we were invited to their dinner auction and made to feel like we had always been out with them, even though it was only our second time. True ladies & gents of the hunting world.

I don't know Molly, my sister used to like nothing better than to get a dead animal for xmas, last count was a mink pad, a deer slot or two, a hare mask, hare pads, fox mask... You get the picture! :11:

I agree about the hunting, it is a much more laid back pace than following foxhounds, beagles or harriers but just as exciting at times! Someone I know of thinks that Minkhunting is highly boring but even on a blank day you get a great walk out, as do the dogs, mine tend to get quite excited now that they know the drill. You are always up with the hounds and see much more hound work and in more detail. Its a great day out and I haven't been out as much as i'd like this season but everyone should try it at least once. :D My daughter loves going too, she likes the close proximity to the action and helping her aunty whip in, help or hinderance has yet to be established...

I used to fish a reservoir for trout at night (was'nt a member of the very expensive angling club) - any way I'd be there until dawn broke with my bubble and fly then do a circuit of the lake with my terrier and my god the mink were friggin everywhere, bolting up trees and into the water . The dog missed more than he caught but we nearly always got a couple. One memory

I do have though is when the dog caught one he had to be clever or the mink would turn in his mouth and get a bite in before he was killed - and they do bite pretty hard.
