AT WHAT AGE DO YOU GUYS THINK OF BREEDING OFF A WORKING TERRIER?   AND WHAT AGE DO USE (APPROX) THINK TERRIERS HAVE MADE THE GRADE,? MYSELF PERSONALLY WOULD   NEVER EVEN THINK OF BREEDING OFF A TE

WELL ALL DEPENDS MY VIEW DOG AT LEAST 4 SEASONS BITCH SAME MAYBE 3 BUT MUST OF SHOWED SOME REALLY TRUE GRIT IN MANY SITUATIONS BUT WITH GOOD WORKING ABILITY REGARDS DABBER

TOTALLT AGREE FELLA NOWADAYS YOU HEAR OF PUPS BEING BORN FROM A 2YR OLD MOTHER THATS WHY THE GAME IS BAD AS IT GETS     YIS CHANCER

I think because a dog/bitch works like a demon doesnt mean any pups will automatically make the grade as well, its the genes that determine how a dog will turn out not the work of the parents.

Ill explain what i mean,

If you bred a very good terrier bitch/dog and sold one pup to a non working home, because that dog will never work does it mean you couldnt breed it and produce a worker? course you could,it carries the genes of good workers.

This bullshit about testing dogs to the limit only comes into play when very gifted knowledgeble blokes decide to create a line and cull anything that doesnt make the grade and thoroughly test every thing that goes into them, theres less of these people about than you think, especially these days, most of us just work and breed dogs created by someone else, when it comes to breeding most people are just playing at it.

Daft question.

i see what you meen by it runs in the genes mate 100% true i had a terrier of a non working bitch and sire but the grand sire and grand dams lines go back a long way in the working world, and that turned out to be a cracker started bushing at 4 months old just did it of its own acord, its down to genes in most cases imo not what the parents have done but i suppose it does give you more sucurity.if you want to breed for specific trates which any genuine dog man does then thats were proven worker to worker comes into play imo atb

i dont think there is a right answer really, its all about judgement and risk. i have bred from a young bitche and do not regret it.i dug her sire and dam many many times so i knew what was in her, she started well and had a good few decent results before i bred from her. i took a chance and used her sire on her and now i am digging 2 of her pups. she herself has turned out to be a very steady reliable bitch.so as i said its all about judgement

I MYSELF DONT THINK THERE IS COMPLETE ANSWER EITHER, ITS A CHANCE YOU TAKE, STILL I WOULDNT BREED OFF A YOUNG

TERRIER THOUGH THAT IS UNDER 2 YEARS OLD, SOME GOOD POINTS ON THE TOPIC WOULD LIKE TO READ MORE

under 2, just over 2,whats the difference, 2yr 3 yr olds are still young dogs,as i said its about judgement, and comman sense.if you need a litter and cant source a decent pup else where sometimes its worth taking the chance

Aask 10 people and you will get 10 different answers possibly. & none of the wrong or right!

Personally, I think you need to think about what you are digging where you are digging & what you are using. Youve got to take am educated gamble in my opinion.

This one was a gamble ;)

imo its all about knowing when and how i would`nt use a bitch under 2 .. i`ll throw a few question in the hat does a dog have to have a 100 plus digs for you to know if its made of the right stuff ? does a dog or bitch have to prove itself for you to use it or would you breed from from an unproven thats from a long line of workers ? .. how many of you would trust yourselfs to get it right ?

if i had a choice to use a well worked dog and a dog bred from workers that was untried i would use the well worked dog

The only person you have to satisfy is the people receiving the pups, if they are the people they should be, they will know the breeding and be happy to accept them, not pay for them and also be trusted to do the right thing with the pup's.

If both parents have impressed enough then nothing else will come into question.

On another note, do you think Pele is still throwing a decent strain of black 'un at his age ?

imo i wouldnt breed off any dog that wernt tryed and tested to my standards genetic does helps a little. personally i would not breed of a fireside dog that had seen nothing even if it had the best blood line of a terrier, its a no no for me good thread good reading
