Chancer 23
AT WHAT AGE DO YOU GUYS THINK OF BREEDING OFF A WORKING TERRIER? AND WHAT AGE DO USE (APPROX) THINK TERRIERS HAVE MADE THE GRADE,? MYSELF PERSONALLY WOULD NEVER EVEN THINK OF BREEDING OFF A TERRIER UNDER 2 YEARS OLD, DOG,OR BITCH, I HAVE BRED MANY TERRIERS IN MY TIME AND NONE OF THEM HAVE BEEN UNDER 2.1/2 YEARS OF AGE AND HAD TO BE A PROVEN WORKER. IM FOREVER HEARING OF PEOPLE BREEDING OFF YOUNG DOGS AND BITCHES SIMPLY BECAUSE THESE DOGS HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF HANDY RESULTS, IMO A YOUNG DOG ,BITCH. UNDER 2YRS OLD CERTAINLY HASNT PROVED ITS WORTH OF BEING CALLED A DECENT WORKING TERRIER. JUST MY OPINION.!!!!!!! WHAT DO YOUS THINK YIS CHANCER one so called handy result shows the dog is doin what it was bred for what do you want a certificate of another self asppointed expert take yer dog of the local lads you know and you wont go far wrong say you breed yourself keep a pup and introduce it right you wont go far wrong. YES TOTALLY AGREE, WHAT IF U BREED OF A YOUNG DOG,BITCH, AFTER SHOWING GOOD SIGNS, THE DEEDS ARE DONE THE PUPS ARE GETTING ON THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE DOG, OR BITCH BRED FROM REFUSES TO DO ITS JOB THEN YOUR GET A NAME ABOUT YOUR DOGS JACKED THIS AND THAT, HAS THIS EVER HAPPEND TO ANBODY THAT HAS TOOK CHANCES? Chancer 23
i dont think there is a right answer really, its all about judgement and risk. i have bred from a young bitche and do not regret it.i dug her sire and dam many many times so i knew what was in her, she started well and had a good few decent results before i bred from her. i took a chance and used her sire on her and now i am digging 2 of her pups. she herself has turned out to be a very steady reliable bitch.so as i said its all about judgement I MYSELF DONT THINK THERE IS COMPLETE ANSWER EITHER, ITS A CHANCE YOU TAKE, STILL I WOULDNT BREED OFF A YOUNG TERRIER THOUGH THAT IS UNDER 2 YEARS OLD, SOME GOOD POINTS ON THE TOPIC WOULD LIKE TO READ MORE YIS CHANCER Quote Link to post

J Darcy 5,871
Young strong bitches give better litters IMO. Its all well and good to "wait another year", but if you are really working terriers in deep earths then sometimes bad things can happen. A bird in the hand....... Quote Link to post
lakeman 12
some dont dig as much as others if a dog is dug 100 times in 2 seasons and another 100 times in 4 seasons wich is better to breed from imo its not the age its the work thave done 100 digs in two seasons........ If you dig EVERY Saturday and Sunday, that's 25 weeks (6 months) of solid digging!! I don't think there are many who can honestly claim that Not directed at you fella, just MHO A 2 year old dog will be lucky to have 1 full season under his belt Edited March 5, 2010 by lakeman Quote Link to post

Say a dog starts at a year old & you were fortunate enough it was this age at the start of the season so has a steady 1st season, after a summer layoff it turns 2yrs at the beginning of the following season & has only completed one full seasons digging. Even at the age of 3yrs the dog will have only completed 2 seasons work & I wouldn't consider breeding off it unless it was the last of a line or at a push thought this dog was possibly shaping up into something special. Or YOU may think the dog has seen enough graft if you're digging cubs etc & not laying off through the summer months. A dog is only as good as it's last dig & can jack at anytime. I would be looking for 3 or 4 good seasons before breeding from the dog. The person who said "what if something happens to the dog?" - if terriermen had used that train of thought in the past there would be even more shite around than there is now & probably alot less working lines. COSH 14
I will breed from a bitch of mine if I feel I need to, and that the mating will be successful. Ive had good pups from young and old alike, but iv got a line that suits me that ive always worked so i know whats coming through. Quote Link to post
Aaron 3
has any one had a dog work a full first season and jack on its second i dont no of any personaly just thoght ide ask i had a dog do that this season! the dog was 4 this season and had always been dug to regular, was never a world beater but he did the job, had some good digs to the dog but unfortunatly he decided it wasnt for him, it happens. the dog hadnt been treated any differant, was healthy etc, he just didnt want it any more. wexford Pa 84
I think if the bitch comes from a proven line of workers it doesnt matter what age u breed her, if its in both sire and dam its in the pups, its up to owner to bring em along properly after that.. .... Pa Quote Link to post
