With the right training and entering they can take anything from small birds up to brown Hares, they have even, on rare occasions,taken canada goose and small deer.Obviously the males are better at the small stuff and females better at the larger stuff.

Of course not, game and pests only, the rest are accidental. I took your question to mean what are they capable of catching. My fault sorry.

ha ha i no not dear lol im interested in the game bird side of it didnt no if it was legal to hunt them. thanks mate but aint going after the muntjak with a bird thats the 223's job

Providing you have permission to be on the land and to take them and the season is open for catching them.

god i bet a harris would bag up on game birds. interesting im a shooter but allways liked the idea of hunting with a bird might start looking into it thanks

males are usually too small for hares, the females are better suited as there heavier, the can take pheasants and other gamebirds but they have to be very fit, males are usually faster than a female but still can get out flew by a pheasant,

 

i was out with a male and a female both 09 birds on tuesday, both put in good flights on pheasant, rabbit, and a partrige but both wernt fit enough and the bag was empty, still good fun though

heres a link for a falconry forum you will find alot of infomation, theres a starter pack full of info too. getting a bird is not somthing to rush into, they need alot of time and knowlage, iv been going out with my mate for 6 years and still learning new things, read a few books first and try and get out with someone,

No it wouldn't! Firstly falconry is not about 'bagging up', its all about the drama and the style of hunting. Even an experienced hawk flown on ground with lots of game will struggle to catch in an entire season what a commercial shoot could kill in a single drive.

 

The best way to find out would be to find an experienced falconer in your area and next season arrange to go out with them.

 

Secondly, whilst either a male or a female harris is more than capable of catching a pheasant, most of the successful flights will be at pheasants running on the ground or followed in the air and then caught after they have put in to cover for the simple reason that a pheasant is a lot faster flier than a harris. Those falconers that fly specifically at pheasant and/or partridge who are looking to achieve more style and have more success than is achievable with a harris will fly either a goshawk or a falcon depending on the type of ground and the preference of the falconer. Both types of hawk require specialist knowledge to get the best out of them and to get to the point of regularly catching such quarry requires an awful lot of knowledge and a large amount of dedication.

 

Again, to get the best idea of what is involved a day out with a local falconer will be worth a thousand words written here.
