bendrover 556
WHAT DO THE READERS THINK ABOUT SIMPLY GIVING AWAY PUPS FOR FREE??? I WAS TAUGHT THAT YOU GET NOTHING FOR NOTHING IN THIS LIFE & IF YOU WANT QUALITY YOU HAVE 2 PAY. EVEN WHEN I HAVE GOT A PUP FOR FREE FROM A FRIEND,I HAVE INNOCULATED OR GAVE A FEW BAGS OF DOG MEAL,AS IT AINT CHEAP TO REAR A LITTER AS WE KNOW EVEN IF U DIDNT HAVE TO PAY A STUD FEE. DO U VALUE SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE PARTED HARD CASH FOR(EVEN AT A REDUCED RATE FOR A FRIEND)??? WHAT DO YOU THINK?? well endgame, you gifted me a pup .i gave you a token gesture of 20 quid.thats the way it should be.but if a stranger gets a pup for free,it sometimes becomes (easy come easy go)so it all depends ,i suppose was a good big dog to ,bred out of beast.it and its sister ran doubled up on a cold jan morning and took 10.pitty about that dogs dodgy toes.atb bendrover WELL I KNEW THE DOG WAS GOING 2 A GOOD HOME & THE £20 WAS A GESTURE THAT U HAD BOUGHT THE DOG & OWED ME NOTHING ( MIND U IF I KNEW U WERE GOING 2 CALL IT LARSSON U WOULD HAVE GOT FECK ALL ) well if you want the best ,you may as well name them after the BEST. That's a strange one Ben ! why didn't you call it COISTY bestard Quote Link to post
watchman 256
A litter of lurcher pups should never be bred for the sole purpose of makeing money.I dont mind paying good money for well bred pups but not pups just bred for money. My last 3 lurchers have all been gifted to me even though i gave things to the breeder in return i have had no luck with the last two as the beddy hybred pup i have would have gone by now if it wasent for a mate giving me the dog thats turning into the worst lurcher i have ever owned just because a mate gave it to you, doesnt mean your obliged to keep it surely, and i dont mean f**k it pass it on,just saying Quote Link to post

AKA-BRINDLE 879
This is a very good thread, which I've followed with interest. My older brother bred a few litters of non-ped Whippets, many years ago, and as far as I know, never sold one of the pups... they were kept for his own use or given to friends, and some turned out to be class dogs. I've had running dogs for 45 years and never bred a litter. Why ? .. well I've never had a bitch that was so good that I would go to the trouble of breeding from ! I've had some good dogs, but there was allways pups available from dogs and bitches as good or better than mine ! I have a very decent bitch now, who has four good seasons behind her and has nowt to proove to anyone; but would I breed from her... I don't think so. I told the man that bred this bitch, that if I had pups from her, I would probably keep one for myself, and cull the rest, as I wouldn't want pups going to people I didn't trust. I wasn't in the market for a new pup, but saw a litter advertised, which I thought were outstanding breeding, and should do the job I wanted, so got in the car and drove over 400 miles to get her ! There are far to many litters being bred from unproven stock, and it doesn't matter if they are sold or given away ! Cheers. Agree with what you say...but Lads with principles like yourself dont breed while peddlers flood the market...you got to ask yourself where dose that leave the future of the breed?...a mate of mine has bred the same family of dogs for decades generous to a fault never made feck all out of em but i have seen lads come along and make good money of the back of his work...you see the thing with gifting pups is that most people no matter how well you think you know them wont have the same standards as you...the last pup i had was offerd as a gift but i insisted on paying full price for him...i mean if a mate buys you a pint in the pub you will always make sure you buy your round...i would question the principles of someone who dont buy their round...wouldnt you?...i have let a dog of mine be used at stud in the past...but these days i leave the breeding to the experts....and feel theres a lot aroung today that should do the same Quote Link to post

stroller 341
A big ethical question on breeding puppies has been highlighted here. i suppose there have always been breeders who want just money and will sell to any numpty with the right amount of cash, but in my youth good working dogs were bred to continue the line and were homed with friends and relatives in the village or surrounding villages (Pit vllages not picturesque cotswold thatched roofed places.) This way the pups growing up were often topics of conversation in the clubs and pubs and so a good line of worker was kept going. but there are too many litters of lurchers that turn into tool box dogs and are often dumped or discarded before they reach adulthood (2 years) as no good. i intend to breed from my pup when she gets to 5 years old i want a replacement for her but i wont do it unless i have good homes waiting for the pups. i wont advertise them as i dont want any scallys round my bit (you know the type) I rescued a puppie (A labradoodle) from a lovely family just lately, the family had bought it with a written contract from the breeder saying they would take it back within a certain timescale. the lady had a very bad allergic reaction to the pup so they tried to take it back they didnt want the money back just a new home for the pup. The breeder refused we got the little fella a home pretty quickly but it just shows these contracts are a load of wank. Before you breed think about the lives of the puppies your bringing into the world. and just go and have a walk around the council dog shelter in langley moor loads of lurchers in there every week its canny sickening.
