Bosun11 537
I havent bred many litters, the last was over five years since and I can't recall how many years it was before that. My thoughts are these, i'd never breed a litter solely for myself, as much as I wanted a pup out of anything i've owned, friends should also covert a pup from the union as much as me, to ensure it was not only my desire that yet another litter comes into this 'disposable' world. In other words, my dogs would have to be 'that' good that other folk would be asking me to breed from them! Then and only then would pups be given, to those I trust most. If there were surplus, then they MUST have a value, no only in the rearing BUT a value to those that buy, something given could be just as easy to give away, or worse and I'd hate to think of what might become of the little 'cuties' that i'd put so much effort into in the first place. Not every one is respectful and responsible and that would make me feel too guilty! Edited March 4, 2010 by Bosun11 Quote Link to post

natter79 17
i was looking for a lurcher pup in jan 09, i was willing to pay for the right dog, a friend of mine with more experience and friend's in the game said he would keep his eye's open. a few weeks went by and a friend of his said he had a pup that i could take (free) as long as the dog would be available in the future to stand stud and he went to a working home, so now i have dog i'm very happy with! atb natter Quote Link to post

waidmann 105
i have bred from terriers(four bitches i owned, two at the same time) and had some cracking pups which have been snapped up(never enough in the litter's) as the people knew the bitch(mostly well known dogs to stud). people i knew would work them and treat them with respect took them for free/covering jabs and wormers depending on how well off i was at the time. i have sold pups too at times where i was not so active and in the process of building up a pack at a price well under the going rate ( russels were fetching 600 mark at the time, i sold mine for 200 to working homes only. i.e. with hunting licence) i see nothing wrong with selling pups that are surplus(not every six months and from responsible breeding).the priority should be to produce good working dogs, preferably having there place before the mating(always people who will let you down). one of my best dogs was given to me for my birthday.he would have cost around 600 quid(teckel of best breeding) i treasured him as a dog who pleased me with everything we did together an absolute cracker above and below ground. if the lads respect the dogs for what they are and not what they are worth then things would be working better in the working dog scene(no matter what breed). atb waidmann Quote Link to post
riohog 5,701
would i charge for pups ...yes i would but i also may gift a pup to the right person , i have had pups gifted to me and paid for pups ,and allways been prepared to pay for what i want ,equally have been prepared and able to look after it ,to many times i hear ..i cant afford the vet bill if something goes wrong, so mybe its more about can you look after a dog rather than how much was paid for it Quote Link to post

bendrover 556
WHAT DO THE READERS THINK ABOUT SIMPLY GIVING AWAY PUPS FOR FREE??? I WAS TAUGHT THAT YOU GET NOTHING FOR NOTHING IN THIS LIFE & IF YOU WANT QUALITY YOU HAVE 2 PAY. EVEN WHEN I HAVE GOT A PUP FOR FREE FROM A FRIEND,I HAVE INNOCULATED OR GAVE A FEW BAGS OF DOG MEAL,AS IT AINT CHEAP TO REAR A LITTER AS WE KNOW EVEN IF U DIDNT HAVE TO PAY A STUD FEE. DO U VALUE SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE PARTED HARD CASH FOR(EVEN AT A REDUCED RATE FOR A FRIEND)??? WHAT DO YOU THINK?? well endgame, you gifted me a pup .i gave you a token gesture of 20 quid.thats the way it should be.but if a stranger gets a pup for free,it sometimes becomes (easy come easy go)so it all depends ,i suppose was a good big dog to ,bred out of beast.it and its sister ran doubled up on a cold jan morning and took 10.pitty about that dogs dodgy toes.atb bendrover Quote Link to post
Wild_and_Irish 11
The lad I bought my last pup off had probably the best idea, £100 for the pup, money back if it's not catchin rabbits in a year, I suppose that would stop the messers passing it on to anybody and it wouldn't be mistreated or put in a shit home if it didn't work. merle24 61
the best dogs are gifted. yes gifted to a friend or someone who you know will do good by the dog! gifting to a total stranger is not good in my opinion!! if they dont know you and the dogs for nothing they might just think its been given away as old crap and the first sighn of it not doing what they want they oust it!!! i belive you should charge a stranger as its not cheap to bring on puppies especially if you have given them to friends aswell!! you owe the stranger nothing so they might look after there investment if they pay for it!!!!
